Charge of the Student Advisory Board to MIT's 16th President

During her transition into the role of MIT's 16th President, Dr. Hockfield has actively sought to engage the MIT student body through an advisory group led by the Graduate Student Council and Undergraduate Association.

This group is charged to perform three essential tasks:

  1. To provide MIT’s 16th President, Dr. Susan Hockfield, with a perspective on MIT culture and community, challenges and opportunities facing MIT, and qualities and priorities of MIT students.
  2. To develop a vision for the future of the MIT student experience.
  3. To act as a vehicle for students to voice their opinions.

Current Status of the Board

The Student Advisory Board began meeting at the start of November and has had several lengthy meetings over 4 weeks. Members of the SAB had a lunch meeting with Dr. Hockfield on Monday, November 29th. Prior to this meeting, a preliminary report was submitted to Dr. Hockfield with an overview of the discussion that had occurred by that time. The report is given below, but please note that this is not meant to be a final report - a great deal of input from the student body will be solicited, and there will be much more discussion before a final report is created!

Members of the Student Advisory Board

Over 110 MIT students applied to be members of the Student Advisory Board. Final membership of the group was selected by the GSC and UA Presidents and Vice-Presidents, after an interview process. Individual members were chosen because they were motivated, excited and open-minded. The group as a whole was chosen to represent the diversity of the campus. A list of the SAB members is given below. You can also find out more about each of the individual members by viewing the SAB facebook.

Background

The MIT Corporation convened the morning of August 26, 2004 to unanimously elect Dr. Susan Hockfield as the 16th president of MIT. Before this election was held, an extensive search process was undertaken to find the most suitable candidate. For the first time in the history of MIT, students were involved in the search process. The Student Advisory Group to the Corporation Committee on the Presidency was officially charged to "provide the Corporation with a representative student perspective on the challenges facing MIT in this decade, and on the experience and personal qualities that should be found in the next president". The Student Advisory Group was also welcomed to and did provide nominations of specific individuals for the MIT Presidency.

Throughout the search process, student feedback and counsel were actively sought through the Student Advisory Group, the hopes and concerns of the student body were fully acknowledged, and the recommendations of the group were taken seriously. On August 26, 2004 the Student Advisory Group was very happy to wholeheartedly endorse and welcome Dr. Susan Hockfield as the new President-elect of MIT.

Due partly to the overwhelming success of the Student Advisory Group to the Corporation Committee on the Presidency, it was determined that a group with a similar structure, led by the GSC and UA, would be formed to introduce President-elect Hockfiled to the concerns and aspirations of the MIT student community. We are currently in the stage of determining the membership of this group.
