Question: Here's a series of questions: 1. I don't get an initial xterm window when I log on. The console says it set it up, but it lied; I have to do it with WindowOps. I'm still running uwm, does this have anything to do with it? 2. How do I print out only certain pages of a file (normal or postscript) without using "enscript"? 3. There are some nifty backdrops running in the video cluster. Are these in XPIX or xpix? If so where? Can they go to B/W screens? Can they go to color VS3100's? 4. Are viewdoc's fonts ever going to get fixed? This would really be nice if they're gonna start charging for paper. 5. When are they gonna start charging for paper? 6. Is viewdoc going to get fixed so that long documents don't overflow it? 7. When does mwm become the default manager? I can't remember the rest (you're probably just as glad). Thanks! E-mail for this stuff is fine, because none of it is really urgent. If that is more convenient, do you want me to mark this question "done"? Thanks again. ___________________________________________________________ To: irbusch@Athena.mit.edu cc: Subject: Your OLC question about other -------- Hi there! I can answer some of your questions, and I'll leave the rest active for another consultant to pick up. You asked: =================================== 2. How do I print out only certain pages of a file (normal or postscript) without using "enscript"? You can print out certain pages of a PostScript file (produced with Scribe) by using psrev. For example, if you wanted to print only pages 3 to 6, then you would type: psrev -R -s 3-6 file.PS | lpr -Pprinter ... where 'printer' is your favorite PostScript printer. The -s options are: N-M print pages N through M -N print beginning to page N M- print page M to the end A,B,C print only pages A, B, and C NOTE that you need to specify the *actual* page numbers, not the numbers that Scribe prints on top of each page. For documents that have a title page, add one to the page numbers you give to psrev. (In the above example, "3-6" would be "4-7".) If your PS (or dvi) file was created with LaTeX or TeX, you cannot use psrev. To print out the first 7 pages of a dvi file, do: dvi2ps -r -t 7 file.dvi | lpr -P printer Pages 22 to 31 would be: dvi2ps -r -f 22 -t 31 file.dvi | lpr -P printer Use enscript for other file types. =================================== 5. When are they gonna start charging for paper? Palladium, the suite of programs that will enable the charge process, is not ready to go out yet. It will probably come out in a summer release. Details will be made known as available. =================================== 7. When does mwm become the default manager? At the end of the month! It is default in release 6.4R, and documentation will be available (how to use mwm, and how to use uwm if you really want to) in the User Release Notes, IAP minicourses, and other relevant docs. =================================== 4. Are viewdoc's fonts ever going to get fixed? This would really be nice if they're gonna start charging for paper. 6. Is viewdoc going to get fixed so that long documents don't overflow it? There will be a better version of viewdoc in the new release, as far as I understand. I'll make a note for other consultants to look at this in case I'm wrong. =================================== I'm leaving the following questions active: 1. Look in /mit/pictures for the color images. I don't recall what format they are in (you do need a color display). When I tried viewing a picture on a display other than a parallax, it left my colormap in such a state that I had to kill the X server to work. Since I can't read your initialization files, I can't answer the question about logging in. sorry about the delay.... I've chmoded my dot files... One comment while I look for the problem..."attach" can attach several things at once, so you can do "attach sipb athenadoc xpix" and save some time during login. Does your path include "/usr/bin/X11"? Do you not-get an initial xterm all the time? Or only once in a while? If it only happens sometimes, then it's a known bug. You can get an xterm by using the root windown menu. Ie, put your mouse on the background, type shift-meta-middlemousebutton all at once, and choose the "new window" option. Thatwill give you an xterm. --Beth Yeah, there are a few times when it has given it to me, but its rare. 90% of the time lately it hasn't been giving me a window. I can deal with it OK, I was jus t curious. *** Reply from consultant kevles@CALIBAN.MIT.EDU [90/01/02 17:48:36] Would you mind recapping any outstanding questions you've got? This olc log is LONG. (Actually, you might be well advised to mark this done, and then start over again to ask your other questions. You'd be more likely to get a quick response that way.)
