This document describes the overall design of Layered Athena--how we expect to implement it in the current Athena environment. The document does not stand alone. For a summary of the scope and requirements for the project, read Athena Layering Requirements. This document also assumes the reader is somewhat familiar with the current (1993) Athena environment, particularly the services and delivery mechanisms.
The design discussed in this document is intended only for Unix platforms. While the terminology and high-level concepts will also apply to personal computers, this level of design is very much Unix specific. We will address PCs and Macs at a later date.
