Schmidt" I guess this stayed in draft form, since it never made its way into the list of Discovery Projects in the Project Data Base. We should probably designate a team leader and get it in there now that people are spending real time on it again. I would be grateful for your review; I've put you as team leader and Greg as sponsor. Let me know if you need anyone else to be mentioned or on the team. Also I was guessing at the time frame, but it should be fast. While we're working on the wording of the charter, you and I should meet to talk about the process, what you want to get out of it, and I would be happy to contribute any of the things I've learned. Thanks, I'm glad to get this underway. Greg This looks a little ugly since it lost its formatting. - ---------------- DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT Long Jobs on Athena MIT Discovery Project Charter January 1996 Description of the problem: In the current Athena environment long-running jobs submitted by users mean that the workstation is tied-up for the length of that job. Given the increasing demands for available Athena workstations, especially at the end of the academic term, a need has been identified to offer a long job service in the Athena environment. This is an important enhancement to the Athena environment and will provide a greater range of options for long jobs. Value added to the Athena environement: The service value of a long jobs facility would be better performance for those jobs and greater satisfaction for the user submitting the long job. The value added for the remainder of the community would be that the workstation where the job was submitted would then be available for other uses. The Discovery effort: The Long Jobs Discovery team will build upon the substantial work already accomplished last summer and fall, and it will further that work through proposal of a recommended option to solve the problem. The existing working group has already accomplished a lot of investigation and probing of options. Among the results to date are: a list of user requirements a list of issues from the Athena side: technical, operational, policy, implementation, etc. a list of next steps, options to consider, plus/deltas of various scenarios. During the discovery period, the team will expand upon this knowledge and will investigate identified options, establish the pros and cons of each option, and estimate the resources required (staff, time, money), especially for the option recommended. The range of options can span the choices from short-term, locally-developed mechanisms to ease the problem, to long-term, supportable solutions that are an incorporated component of the Athena environment. Among the new activities that the Discovery team may wish to pursue are surveys and monitoring of long jobs and the methods by which they are currently handled, some measurement of the size of the problem, and building momentum and awareness for changes in user behavior. The team should begin to frame ongoing, operational issues such as implications for the service and support processes, measurement and evaluation of the service, and with the option recommended, design proposals and estimates for delivery of this service. Discovery Logistics: Team and Timeframe The Long Jobs Discovery team will be led by Naomi Schmidt. Team members will be Matt Braun, Carla Fermann, and Tom Coppeto. Team sponsor will be Greg Jackson, Academic Computing Director. Other members of the MIT community will be involved as needed for user experience, technical expertise, or evaluation of information. The Long Jobs Discovery team will present its findings to its sponsor by Friday, March 8. ------- End of Forwarded Message
