Up: Installation and Troubleshooting

WebEQ Installation Notes (Windows)

WebEQ has been tested under Windows 95, 98 and NT. Unfortunately, Java installations under Windows have historically been rather problem prone. In particular, web browsers and Java installations have a tendency to fight with each other. For example, installing an upgrade to one web browser can cause another to quit functioning properly.

In general, diagnosing and fixing these kinds of problems can be very difficult. In many cases, the simplest thing to do is to uninstall and reinstall the malfunctioning piece of software. In particular, if the WebEQ Editor or Page Wizard seem to start and immediately shutdown, this is typically a problem with Java. Download the WebEQ installer which includes the Java virtual machine, and reinstall WebEQ. A few additional things to note about the Windows installation:

  1. InstallAnywhere creates a new program group in the Start Menu -> Programs menu called "WebEQ", and puts several entries in it:

    • WebEQ Equation Editor.
    • WebEQ Page Wizard.
    • WebEQ Documentation -- a shortcut to the main WebEQ documentation page.
    • WebEQ Uninstaller -- a shortcut to the InstallAnywhere uninstallation program.

  2. If you haven't already done so, you will probably want to install the WebEQ Math Viewer archive file in your browser. The free, self-installing archive is available at www.mathtype.com.
