Math Viewer Sample Installation Page

This page demonstrates a couple of methods of making the self-installing Math Viewer archive files available to your readers. You can use it along with the templates in the install directory of your WebEQ installation to quickly set up your server.

If you haven't already done so, you may wish to install the Math Viewer in your own Web browser. You can do so by following the links, or clicking on the button below. Installation requires that you have Java and JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Note: If you are viewing this page through a Web server, these links may not work -- see the documentation for delivering the self-installing archives above for tips on configuring your server.

The links provide a simple example of how to set up analogous links on your own server:

  • Click here to install the WebEQ JAR Archive if you are using Netscape Communicator 4 under Windows and Unix.

Macintosh users and people behind proxy servers or firewalls may need to do the installation by hand. Use "Save Link As" on WebEQApplet.jar to save the Math Viewer JAR archive to your local disk. Then move that file to the "Netscape Communicator : Plugins" folder. (Unix users should move the file to the ".../Program/Java/Download" directory of your Netscape installation or your .netscape directory.) Finally, restart your browser.

  • Click here to install the WebEQ CAB Archive if you are using Internet Explorer 4 or higher under Windows.

Macintosh Internet Explorer users have to do the installation by hand. Use "Save Link As" on WebEQApplet.jar to save the Math Viewer JAR archive to your local disk. A good place to put the file is the Plugins folder in your Internet Explorer folder. Then open the Preferences panel in Internet Explorer (under the Edit menu) and select "Java" to bring up the Java preference panel. Add the WebEQApplet.jar file to your classpath, and restart the browser.

You can also click on the button below to use a somewhat more sophisticated installation script. (This script is also used when you use the Wizard to generate header code which automatically prompts users to install the Math Viewer if they haven't already.)

Testing your Math Viewer Installation

If you have a slow connection, it is easy to tell if you have the Math Viewer properly installed just by watching how long it takes for it to start when you visit a page. However, if you are working locally, or have a very fast connect, the Math Viewer can download so quickly that it isn't very clear whether or not you succesfully installed the viewer.

One good way to do this is to create a test page in which the applet calls to the Math Viewer do NOT actually point at the WebEQ classes on the server. Since this page can't display unless your browser has the files locally available in the archive file, such a page provides a sure-fire way of determining if your local Math Viewer installation is working properly in your browser.

For convenience, such a test page is provided here.

The other side of the coin is that once you install the Math Viewer archive, you may have difficulty testing pages that are set up to deliver the class files on demand; whether or not those pages are set up correctly, your browser will use the local copy and display the page. See the note on uninstalling the archives for more help.
