Patrick Ewing scored 16 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter. Michael Jordan was held to 31 points. In the West, the Portland Trail Balzers took a 1-0 semifinal series lead with a 113-111 win over Phoenix. DALY CALLS IT QUITS: Chuck Daly made it official Tuesday, stepping down as coach of the Detroit Pistons. "It's kind of an evolution," Daly said. "You just know when it's time. They need to hear another voice. Maybe they needed it two years ago. It's just time. That's all I can say." Daly, who will coach the men's U.S. Olympic basketball team this summer, said he has no plans beyond that. RANGERS, BRUINS WIN: The New York Rangers downed the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 Tuesday to even their best-of-seven Patrick Division final at 1-1. The Rangers were without leading scorer Mark Messier, who was out with back spasms, and the Penguins lost Mario Lemieux, who was slashed in the left wrist, in the first period. Also, the Boston Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the Adams final with a 3-2 OT win over Montreal. DODGERS LOSE FIFTH STRAIGHT: Terry Mullholland (1-3) got his first win of the season Tuesday as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the L.A. Dodgers 6-2. It was the Dodgers' first game after a five-day layoff because of rioting in L.A., and their fifth straight loss. Other NL scores: Chicago 4, Atlanta 3, 10 ins.; Houston 5, New York 4; Montreal 5, San Diego 2; Pittsburgh 5, Cincinnati 2; St. Louis 7, San Francisco 5. RANGERS DOWN ORIOLES: Nolan Ryan got off to a poor start, allowing the first five batters to reach base, but retired six of the last seven he faced and the Texas Rangers went on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 Tuesday. In other AL games: Detroit 2, California 1; Boston 4, Minnesota 1; Cleveland 8, Kansas City 6; Chicago 12, Milwaukee 2; Seattle 7, New York 4; Toronto 5, Oakland 1. TIGERS SALE NEARS: The Detroit News reports that Edsel Ford II is poised to buy the Detroit Tigers. But Goldman Sachs Co., the New York investment banking firm hired by owner Tom Monaghan to review offers, has prepared a report that puts the value of the Tigers at $82 million-$90 million, far below the price of $125 million that Monaghan reportedly wanted. TYSON DISCIPLINED: Mike Tyson was moved to solitary confinement and faces a disciplinary hearing after he twice threatened prison guards and supervisors Monday with bodily harm, Indiana Department of Corrections spokesman Kevin Moore said Tuesday. The former heavyweight champ, serving six years for rape, had his privileges restricted until after a hearing, probably Thursday or Friday. KRICKSTEIN, BECKER WIN: Top-seeded Aaron Krickstein defeated Jacco Eltingh 6-3, 6-1 in the $225,000 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships at Charlotte. Also, Germany's Boris Becker defeated Thierry Champion of France 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in a second-round match at the German Open in Hamburg. The USA's Andre Agassi defeated Argentina's Martin Jaite 6-2, 6-3. SOCKERS TAKE 3-0 LEAD: Jimmy McGeough scored 1:57 into overtime Tuesday to give the San Diego Sockers a 5-4 victory and a 3-0 lead on the Dallas Sidekicks in their Major Soccer League best-of-seven championship series. The goal came off a deflected save by Dallas goalkeeper Scott Manning. Game 4 is Friday. HASSELMO SUPPORTS PROPOSAL: University of Minnesota president Nils Hasselmo says the school probably will support a proposal to increase the proportion of female athletes on Big Ten campuses. But because no new money is available to expand women's sports at the university, Hasselmo conceded Monday that meeting the proposed goals probably would mean cutting the number of men on teams. EXPANDED FIELDS REJECTED: The NCAA Executive Committee Tuesday rejected requests to expand the tournament fields of 11 sports, including baseball and women's basketball. Meeting in Tucson, Ariz., the policy-making group said it would survey the wishes of member schools and possibly review the matter at its August meeting. Because budgets will be locked in by then, there can be no expansion until 1993-94. DRIVERS ESCAPE SERIOUS INJURIES: Two drivers hit the wall during practice runs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tuesday, but escaped serious injury. Paul Tracy, a teammate of Rick Mears and Emerson Fittipaldi with Roger Penske Racing, bruised his right arm and left knee. Earlier, Scott Brayton escaped a run-in with the Turn 4 wall with only minor bruises on his feet. 24-HOUR TELEPHONE INFORMATION: USA TODAY Sports Hot Line. 95 cents a minute. 1-900-555-5555.
