Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 20 July 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:41 by William M. York. In attendance were WMY, CWH, RLL, barmar, GMP, CAH, HGA, RDM, Naha. Late were: ACW, c/, RK, JIS, RSL, JSL, DMK, Jay, DCP, SEL, Beth Lampron The minutes of the meeting of 13 July 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. ACW, c/, RK came in during this. *** User Interrupt *** TCA - Eric Sohn - $150 for working on the Freshman Picture Book and Freshman Interest Cards. Given. *** End User Interrupt *** JIS, RSL, JSL, DMK came in during this. Treasurer's Report: No treasurer at the moment. Does JJS want an American Express card? No. Total: $1,927.26 on Multics, slightly less than a third of which is SIPBADMIN; $150 is ECS. Jay came in during this. Many Students have already come back for seconds. Jay got in touch with all the Coop users who were being funded through OSP accounts. Chairman's Report: The chairman did not get hold of Ken Dumas, the UAVP. Dumas is working in the coffeehouse right now. The chairman has begun working on the Annual Report. He will work on it, with the aid of the modem RLL lent him. DCP came in during this. Office Report: There does not seem to be any LA120 paper in the office. There are two boxes of paper in the Student Center Terminal Room cabinet. What is the status of the stuff we used to have in the darkroom (like old bills, Computer Trash, etc.)? They seem to have gone away. Computer Services: When we mount a tape, we have to give it an authentication name. At today's meeting about continuum, the topic came up about fascist ACLs on unbundled software sources. JIS thinks that *.SIPBADMIN should get access to all sources, since we are sort of like staff. If we do this, we have to agree not to abuse this privilege. RK suggests that just JJS get this access; DCP suggests that we do it for SIPB_consult.SIPBADMIN; JIS hopes that everyone on SIPBADMIN is trustworthy enough. We should probably set up a SIPBADMIN policy statement which documents what is expected out of SIPBADMIN people. JIS will try to set up this access. The SIPB continuum meeting has been deleted. Nobody was taking it seriously. "login Foo.Bar" now works. Telecommunication Report: The SIPB donated its old Institute map to the Chaos Working Group. Multics is on the Chaosnet. It has a telnet server. There was a meeting of the campus networking group. Prof. Corbato' has seen the Student Center Terminal Room and is disgusted by the small size of it. RLL will approach the Library with a request for a larger room, as a representative of the networking group. If the networking group will arrange for a terminal concentrator for such an installation, would we be willing to put up the terminals? Yes. RK mentioned that we had previously voted to get a spare acoustic coupler and a cover for the SpinWriter. Naha says he will look into a demo for a cover. RK moved to get a spare Anderson-Jacobson acoustic coupler. Passed. There still is no speed switch on the other split-speed Vadic modem. The phone that can dial outside should be the split speed one. DMK will switch this. Publications Report: "The time has come," the Chairman said, "to talk of many things. Of NUMs and NETs..." We need to implement the new publications ideas that we designed in the spring. R/O Report: Mumble. The carpenters are still on strike, so the new dormitory will not be ready in time for the new inhabitants. Other: CBF was in town this week. He left his tiddlywinks mat here again. How many freshmen should we open the loft to? Some of the MacLisp utilities are now getting documented by Alan, GSB, etc. Applications: Gary Palter's old applications were in the "To Meeting" bin. SEL, Beth Lampron came in during this. Total appropriations: $1160 without Coop Autoed: Student: $1160 370: $0 To Meeting: $0, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $300 Other Other: There is going to be a Rubik's Cubathon at Jordan Marsh in Burlington Mall. Jay has a new H-19. It is a key to the door to the LSC Production Facilities (W20-457). JSL went to a SF convention this weekend, and saw a video version of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" will be on again, and RLL took out the garbage this morning. There is a Naha trapped on the loft, meowing loudly. Montreal expedition Friday 8/7/81 through Sunday 8/9/81. See RK. The meeting was adjourned at 21:31. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
