Enabling Copying and Pasting to and from Virtual Machines

The clipboard of the operating system on your physical computer and the guest operating system clipboard can communicate. You can copy and paste text between applications in the virtual machine and the physical computer or between two virtual machines. Each time the mouse pointer of your guest operating system is released by the remote console, the content of the guest operating system clipboard is copied into the clipboard of the operating system on your physical computer. Similarly, each time the mouse pointer of your physical computer is captured by the remote console, the content of the clipboard of the operating system on your physical computer is copied to the guest operating system clipboard.

You can only copy and paste text, not graphics or other items.

Note: This option only has effect when VMware Tools is running in the virtual machine.

Note: If you are copying text from a Windows host into a Linux guest operating system, you can paste only by using the middle mouse button. If you are using a two-button mouse, click both mouse buttons at the same time to paste.

  1. Connect to a virtual machine with a remote console.

Note: Since input preferences are global and apply to all virtual machines running on a host machine, you do not need to open a configuration file before setting these preferences.

  2. Select Settings > Input Preferences.

  3. Select Enable Copy and Paste to and from Virtual Machine.

  4. Click OK.
