Changing General Configuration Options

Select: VM > Settings > Options > General

Use the options on this panel to change basic information about the virtual machine.

Changing the Name of a Virtual Machine

To change the name of a virtual machine:

  1. Highlight the name indicated in the Virtual machine name entry field.
  2. Enter a new name.
  3. Click OK to save your change and close the virtual machine settings editor.

The name of the virtual machine appears in the inventory and on the tab for that machine in the virtual machine display.

Changing the Guest Operating System Type

To change the guest operating system type:

  1. Select the appropriate guest operating system type (Microsoft Windows, Linux, Novell NetWare or Other), then select the specific version from the Version list.
  2. Click OK to save your change and close the virtual machine settings editor..

When you change the operating system type using the Version list, this changes the setting for the guest operating system type in the virtual machine's configuration file. It does not actually change the guest operating system itself.

When you set the guest operating system type while creating a new virtual machine (for example, through the New Virtual Machine Wizard), VMware Server chooses configuration defaults based on the guest type. However, changing the guest type on this panel simply changes the guest type setting in the configuration file.

You might change the guest operating system, for example, if you are upgrading the guest operating system installed in the virtual machine.

Changing the Working Directory

The working directory is where VMware Server stores suspended state (.vmss) and snapshot (.vmsn) files. By default, this directory is the same as where the virtual machine files are stored.

To change the working directory for a particular virtual machine:

  1. Enter the name of a directory to use, or click Browse to select a directory.
  2. Click OK to save your change and close the virtual machine settings editor.
