What is music? Why do we listen to it? What are its effects upon us? What types of music are appropriate and what arent? These are questions that have been explored by us over and over again over the centuries. At the present time we use it for many reasons--to relax, to enjoy ourselves, to affect our audience, to incite a political or social reaction. 1500 years ago the Greeks were addressing these same issues....the Greek ideal was a sound body and mind, a balance of all things to contribute to a perfect being. Music was thought of as a means to achieve part of this. They persued gymnastics to perfect the body and the arts to balance this and perfect the mind. Improper music was thought to make a person weak, or immoral, and for this reason was to be avoided.
