Disclaimer
I like to watch movies. I usually like the movies I watch. I often like movies that other people do not like (I suppose I have a gift for identifying positive qualities). Keep this in mind as you read my reviews. You might find them refreshingly positive relative to most movie reviews that you read.

The Princess Bride - 08/02/03

This one is just one of those classics that you need to see every decade or so. In fact I think it's even more appealing now then when it first came out (1987) because it is so pure in it's depiction of classic fairy tale plot tulfillment and protagonist innocence.

The Point: Use your extraordinary powers for good and not evil because... well just because. Besides, we all know what happens to the bad guys by the end of the movie. Besides, who wants to face the wrath of Sean Connery? I'd want to let him age at least another decade.

Overall Rating: Definitely one the best romantic comedies that I know of.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - 07/28/03

In this movie, everything looks cool, but nothing looks real. Expectations for realism don't really play a part though because the whole thing is smorgasbord of fictional literary charachters with supernatural powers. All the literary illusions are pretty cool but the plot and character development was somewhat lacking. However, it's almost worth watching just to see the Nautilis which was extremely cool -- although you definitely wonder how they drove that huge thing around the canals of Venice.

You almost feel sorry for Sean Connery though. You can just tell he's to old to be doing the things he's supposedly doing. It's frustrating because you don't really believe he could win any of those fist fights, but he still does.

The Point: Use your extraordinary powers for good and not evil because... well just because. Besides, we all know what happens to the bad guys by the end of the movie. Besides, who wants to face the wrath of Sean Connery? I'd want to let him age at least another decade.

Overall Rating: Not bad.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life - 07/27/03

OK, I know I claim to have a positive attitude towards movies, but I can only do so much. I mean, give me something to work with here. I'm there are good things that could be said about this movie, but I don't know what they are. I went into this movie thinking, "well, at least I know it can't be as bad as the first one..." No, no, it was much worse. That in itself I find impressive.

The whole time I'm thinking, this Lara Croft chick wants to be Indiana Jones. She thinks she's cooler than Indiana Jones and more of a badass, but she couldn't be more wrong. I'm all for suspension of disbelief (I mean I liked The Hulk right?), but this movie is just asking too much -- plus you don't even want to believe it because it's dumb.

The Point: Lara Croft should have stayed a video game. Angelina Jolie was better off doing movies like Hackers and Gone in Sixty Seconds.

Overall Rating: Friends don't let friends go see this movie.

28 Days Later - 07/24/03

Wow. This movie is seriously disturbing. It's very good... at being disturbing. If you've seen the previews, you may suspect that this movie is about the desperate struggle for survival of a few random people in a world taken over by disease infected zombies. While this is true, this is only the first battle that these people must endure. Once there safe from the "infected" they still have to protect themselves from the other survivors. Overall, it's a pretty dark portrayal of human nature highlighted by the instinct survival.

There's definitely a lot going on in this movie. The cinematography is often surreal and even artsy at times. The soundtrack is bewilderinly diverse, ranging from silly to downright unsettling. And there's even two endings (you have to stay past the credits) which are both optimistic in their own way, but the second one is sort of depressing.

The Point: There are several in my humble opinion: Solving one problem does not put you in the clear, but, rather, opens up the door for new problems; Survival is not enough to satisfy the human heart; and finally, much pain and suffering could be avoided if people would just heed the words of the nerdy scientist guy.

Overall Rating: If you like disturbing, then go see it right now! But don't say I didn't warn you.

Favorite Quote: Jim: No, no, no. See this is a really sh*t idea. You know why? Because it's really obviously a sh*t idea

Bringing Down the House - 07/05/03

Well, you've got to admit that the combination of Steve Martin and Queen Latifah is a creative one. There's plenty of funny moments but nothing spectacular. I had high expectations of Steve Martin so I think I was a little let down. He had his moments, but nothing on the level of The Jerk.

The Point: Mid-life crisis with family and career? Try making friends in an Internet chatroom so you can ethnically diversify your boring life. Also, if you have irreconcilable issues with your ex-spouse, try throwing your cell phone out the window, then it will be all better.

Overall Rating: Well it was a good way to pass the time on a nine hour plane ride.

Favorite Quote: You got all the cool points out the window and you got me all twisted up in the game.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - 07/02/03

Ah-nold's back and I hope I look as good as he does when I'm 57. This was a pretty awesome movie. It's not doing particularly well by the other movie critics, but this reviewer was on the edge of his seat most of the time. Very cool action and pretty neat tie-ins to the previous two movies. They still managed to come up with some new stuff and there was also some pretty decent humor.

The Point: Time travel is bound to make your life more complicated. Also, this new terminator could waste the two previous male terminators without breaking a sweat and she's female; what does this mean? Hell hath no fury...

Overall Rating: Awesome (and who cares what the reviews say since you're going to see it anyway?)

Favorite Quote: TBD (it was too long for me to remember...)

How to Lose a Guy in 10 days - 07/01/03

OK, at the risk of alienating the male, macho segment of my readership... I liked this movie. While the concept isn't exatly original, it's very cleverly implemented here. I think they successfully identified all the stereo-typical things that women do to freak out men and also created some new ones of their own.

Here's the key observation that I'd like to make: If the main female character was able to purposefully and delberately do all these things that drive men crazy, then it must mean that women (or at least some of them) know how annoying these things are to men. Hmmm... very suspicious.

The Point: Your life will not turn out the way you plan -- especially if romance is involved. Why? Because God has a sense of humor and he likes to be more creative than that.

Overall Rating: Very funny and quite bearable for a "chick-flick"

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 06/30/03

If you hadn't noticed the pattern, we were trying to watch both Terminator movies before T3 comes out on Wednesday. We were successful! T2 is by all accounts an awesome movie, but it wasn't as in-depth as I remembered it in the science fiction sense. Still, I think this movie is tied to the first one in a very clever way. They did an excellent job of picking up where the last story left off and of incorporating new elements while keeping the essentials from the previous one. James Cameron not only avoided the pitfall of ending up with just a remake of the first movie, but he created an excellent new story that builds upon and even enhances the appeal of its prequal.

The Point: Can the future be changed by changing the past? Is man inherently destructive?

Overall Rating: Solid. You've probably seen it bunches of times, but you might want to catch it again before T3 if it's been more than a couple years.

The Count of Monte Cristo - 06/29/03

Very high quality movie. I enjoyed it very much. I never read the book, but now I wish I had. The strength of movie certainly seems to come from the story itself, which I assume is not to far from the original in the book. The character transformation that takes place is quite gripping and there's some awesome action scenes in the second half. Your sympathy will be evoked for the main character, but the pull isn't quite strong enough to disrupt your superior moral vantage point.

The Point: People can accomplish almost anything if they have purpose. However, the morality of your motives will determine who you become in the end and how much you can enjoy your accomplishments.

Added Bonus: Rowing!

Overall Rating: Highly recommend, but read the book first if you like literature.

Antwone Fisher - 06/26/03

A pretty amazing story made into a pretty decent movie. There's definitely some pretty disturbing content, so be forewarned. The great achievement in this movie doesn't come in the form of accomplishing some great physical or intellectual task. The triumph here is overcoming hatred and abuse and finding new life through facing fears and forgiving your oppressors. The character development is a little shakey and the story isn't quite fully developed, but it's still good.

The Point: Some people are born with what it takes to rise above the misfortune of horrid circumstances.

Question: What exactly is going on with the cinematography during the prayer in the Thanksgiving scene? What are they trying to say?

Overall Rating: Worth renting.

Favorite Quote:
Fisher: It don't matter what you tried to do, you couldn't destroy me! I'm still standing! I'm still strong! And I always will be.

The Terminator - 06/23/03

(Yes the original.) Wow, it's amazing how cheezy this movie seems nowadays. I watched this with the guys from my small group. We're going to watch T2 next week and then go see T3. It's hard to believe that this movie started it all. Seeing it now, it seems as if it could have just as easily ended up forgotten in obscurity. But I guess it was pretty revolutionary and ground breaking at the time. In fact, it looks as even The Matrix owes some of its concepts to this story.

The Point: Try not to make you're computers too smart or they will send Arnold Schwarzenegger back into the 80's to wreak havoc on people with funny haircuts. Oh, there's also some stuff about the unconquerable human spirit that will always rise to the occasion to overcome overwhelming adversity.

Overall Rating : Good, because it's a classic.

Favorite Quote: Don't make me bust you up, man!

The Hulk - 06/22/03

Very very COOL! Probably every review you read or person you talk to will say this movie sucked. I can see why they say that, but I don't agree. It was awesome! I don't think this movie was trying to be a "good movie," it was trying to be something new and different. There's been a recent barrage of comic-book-hero movies, some good (Spiderman), some bad (DareDevil), but The Hulk was a bold attempt to redefine this genre.

If you go watch this film expecting to see a "good movie," evaluating it according to generic standards, you will probably be pretty disappointed. However, if you go expecting to see a live-action, digitally-enhanced, full-screen comic book, then it's a totally cool experience. Everything about this movie -- the storyline, the characters, the dialog, the action, the cinematography, the special effects and even the layout of the screen -- is very comic-bookesque. I found it's presentation to be very creative and risky.

What you won't see: Sex, drugs, bloody or gory violence, good acting from Nick Nolte

What you will see: Very cool digital screen transitions, pants of amazing elasticity, Lou Ferrigno, Stan Lee, and green in just about every scene.

The Point: Trying to take over the role of God never leads to anything good. This is the lesson that the Bruce Banner's father (Nolte) should of learned but didn't. Also: pissing off the Hulk on purpose is not very bright.

Overall Rating: "Incredible!" (what else?)

Favorite Quote:

Drumline - 06/17/03

Worth renting -- especially if you want to relive the excitement of high school or college football games. I can't really imagine a movie about playing the drums being any more interesting than this. If you see just one movie about playing the drums this year, see Drumline.

The Point: Eventually, no matter how talented you are, you have to realize that you're human and the same rules that apply to everyone else also apply to you... So STAY IN SCHOOL kids! and DON'T DO DRUGS! However, being really good at something will still get you special treatment and make everybody like you more (as long as you're not a jerk about it).

One word description: Crunk!

Favorite Quote: Man, you gotta BANG that drum.

Dumb and Dumberer - 06/14/03

If you don't know what to expect from this movie, just read the title. If you go in with higher expectations, you'll be disappointed... duh! However, with low enough expectations you'll be able to enjoy lots of slapstick, Neanderthal, low-brow humor. If you liked the jokes from the first one, good! You'll get to see them again, plus some new ones.

The Point: Ignorance is bliss, clearly.

Overall Rating: Funny, as long as you don't require sophistication in your humor.

Most Redeeming Feature: Bob Saget

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - 06/04/03

I hadn't seen this one in years. It's so good! Very clever and funny. This movie was the precursor to Snatch which received more publicity, but wasn't quite as good as this one in my opinion. Take a Seinfeld-style interlocking plot, add some gratuitous violence, and a carefully measured dose of British humor and you've got Lock Stock. Good job Guy Ritchie. There's some awesome cinematography too.

The Point:
Don't know if there is one. Except maybe that if you are creative enough and make a really cool movie, Brad Pitt will star in the next one you make.

Overall Rating: CleverCool is the word I coin for this movie.

Bruce Almighty - 05/30/03

I was a little worried about seeing this one, but I'm glad I did. I thought it was well made and some of the themes are surprising for a secular, mainstream movie. Jim Carrey is fantastic as always. Interestingly enough, my Pastor, Charles Park, gave a really cool sermon that referenced this movie in June 8 service at the Vineyard. The sermon was entitled "Does It Matter When I Pray?" Well it certainly mattered for Bruce. Charles also very observantly pointed out the point at which things turn around for Bruce and why they change at that point. Very interesting! Can you catch this turning point and it's significance?

The Point:
For me the take-away was that there's more going on in life than we realize. There is reason and purpose driving our life. Freedom and happiness come from embracing these forces as they are rather than trying to coerce them towards your own purposes. Also, there is power in praying for the ones you love.

Overall Rating: Very fun with some great spirituality.

Things to Notice: What kind of hat is God wearing? Is anyone surprised? I didn't think so.

As Good as it Gets - 05/26/03

I had seen this one before, of course, but I seem to appreciate it more each time I see it. It's most Excellent and masterfully titled. Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt -- it's hard to go wrong. The Dialog is genius and the characters are superb.

The Point:
I think this movie is about the ever-present conflict between life and loving relationships. People want to be in loving relationships but life gets in the way and confuses, corrupts, and otherwise sabotages this otherwise innocent and good inclination we have to love. This movie shows people overcoming the obstacles of life to love and support each other. Forgive my cheesiness.

Overall Rating: Excellent. See it if you haven't already.
