Dragonewts, at least the large ones, are very large, powerful, and scary. Plus the party thinks they're cool, probably because they're usually also mysterious and cryptic. We travelled with one for a little while to investigate the Chaos in the North (it turns out they're building a Chaos God there, which is no good), and when he had seen enough, he declared that he was returning home the fastest way possible, by charging the monsters and attacking them until he was killed (we fled). As he had explained (somewhat cryptically) on the journey, dragonnewts are reborn in their eggs. Consequently, they take egg destruction Very Very Seriously.
Dave's note: If memory serves, there was actually a conversation wherein the Dragonewt in question said that the response to the last time anyone had destroyed a Dragonewt egg had more or less become "standard policy". When asked what that response had been he off-handedly mentioned something about a race of giants having been hunted to extinction...
