We had headed off on a "brief" ocean voyage, looking for a lost Mystic Book. We left our horses in a stable at the port, paying some number of gold pieces a week to have them looked after while we were gone. We paid enough for something like six weeks ("That'll be plenty") but it was many months before we escaped from from the Island of Huge Killer Ants and could get back. In the meantime, most of the horses had been sold.
