Read/Write Own Language is one of those skills that most peasants don't have very high. Since the ability to sound things out phonetically has not yet been discovered, this leads to things like "Well, this sign points to something with a T in it, and this other one says something with an R is in that direction." It's very embarassing when people (mostly upper-class people, like the Baron) send us notes.
