FAQ

Some frequently asked questions about being a Biology postdoc:
What is the difference between a Postdoctoral Fellow and a Postdoctoral Associate?
A Postdoctoral Associate is paid directly by the Institute from a research grant (usually the Associate's faculty member's), while a Postdoctoral Fellow receives funding from an outside agency, sometimes funneled through MIT's Payroll Office.

When do I get paid?

Postdoctoral Associates are paid on the last working day of each month for that month. Postdoctoral Fellows are paid in advance on the last working day of each month for the coming month.

What health benefits can Postdocs receive?

Postdoctoral Associates may be eligible for MIT-subsidized benefits depending on the length and the percent effort of the appointment. Please visit the Human Resources Benefits page for specific information regarding eligibility. You may also contact the Department's Human Resources Administrator in Headquarters, 68-132, x3-4701.

Postdoctoral Fellows qualify for the MIT Affiliate Health Program. Affiliates are postdoctoral fellows, research fellows and visiting scientists with a 50 percent or more time MIT appointment for a minimum of three months, who are not paid by MIT funds. The Affiliate MIT Medical Plan covers most on-campus outpatient services at MIT Medical. Affiliates can also purchase coverage for their spouse and children. MIT Affiliate Hospital Insurance covers inpatient hospital care on and off campus, along with outpatient prescription drugs and more. For more information call the Affiliate Health Program, call 617-253-4371 or send e-mail to affplan@med.mit.edu.

Where do I pick up my paycheck?

Your paycheck will be available for pick up in the Cashier's Office, 10-180. See also When Do I Get Paid? We strongly encourage you to request direct deposit of your paycheck. Forms are available in Headquarters 68-132 as well as in the Payroll Office in E19-510.

Where can I find information regarding fellowships?

The Postdoc Fellowships page has some useful resources; you can also contact the BioFinance Office for further information regarding fellowships.
