Gala Winter Beginner Night II for All (Independent Activities Period)
Caller: Harry Brauser (former MIT dance instructor)
Music: John Chambers, friends & sit-ins
In Lobdell Dining Hall,
2nd floor of the Student Center.
WOODY LANE--An exciting and imaginative caller: "I try to share the magic of these wonderful dances with the dancers, weaving an evening's program that is exciting, challenging, and always fun. Sometimes I'll call smooth, flowing contras, sometimes old-chestnut contras that have held their beauty over the years, sometimes Sicilian circles that flow forever, sometimes intricate contras that allow dancers to discover delightful rewards in the movements and flirting and flow. And during an evening, I'll sometimes call some hard-driving squares, southern and western style, with lots of high-energy, old-time patter calls, dancers moving together in tight communities of eight, helping each other, working together to enjoy the fun and excitement of those dances. And sometimes while I call, I'll do some flat-footing--adding syncopation to Rex and Margie's tunes, an exciting blend of fiddle, piano, and percussive rhythms."
REX BLAZER on fiddle and MARGIE KATZ on piano--two of the best musicians from the Pacific Northwest: "Rex & Margie draw packed dances wherever they perform. They play a unique style of exciting, driving music, always melodic, always complex, with an uncanny ability to match their tunes precisely to the dances. Rex is one of the finest fiddlers in the country. He has been on staff at many dance and music camps around the country, and his imaginative interpretations of the tunes are unmistakable. Margie's spirited piano blends so well with Rex's fiddle that they sometimes seem to play like one unforgettable instrument."
