Student Groups and Activities
A great deal of the social life of students at MIT is centered around the wide variety of student groups that exist on campus. There is a group for nearly any type of hobby or interest that you might have, as well as an array of cultural affinity groups that reflect the diversity of MIT. If a group does not currently exist to support your interest, resources exist to help you create one that will!
Departmental Student Groups
In addition to student groups centered around hobbies, interests, or cultures, there are a number of Departmental Student Groups that exist to build and support community within the departments they represent. A list of and links to these groups may be found on our Departmental Student Group page.
Student Group Resources
The Association for Student Activities (ASA), one of the Graduate Student Council's standing committees (and a joint committee with the Undergradtuate Association), is responsible for overseeing all of these student groups and is also the primary resource for all official groups, and students interested in these groups. The ASA provides:
- a full listing of student groups that are recognized by the ASA (these are all of the "official" student groups)
- information to help start a new student group
- funding guidelines for student groups (you should also check the GSC's Student Group Funding page if you are interested in this)
- publicity guidelines
- other resources (including info regarding office space, bulletin boards, and room reservations)
