Notes from Payroll
Tax forms will be mailed from Payroll and Accounts Payable at different times between January 31, 2008 and March 1st
Please contact Payroll or Accounts Payable _after February 1, 2008_ if you have questions about the forms you will receive.

Foreign nationals who qualify for a Tax Treaty in 2008 should come by the HR/Payroll Office during January 2008 to fill out new forms, or they can email mdailey[at]mit[dot]edu to request forms.
If you're a foreign national who filled out tax forms in 2007, your next scheduled sign up will be in 2010. (Please note: Fellowship Tax Treaties are effective for three years).
Foreign nationals are encouraged to check the IRS web site www.irs.ustreas.gov -Publication 901-US Tax Treaties to ensure that they qualify.
Before You Start (some tips)
- Deadline for filing federal taxes is April 15, 2008
- Deadline for Massachusetts state taxes is also April 15, 2008
- The sooner you file your return, the sooner you receive your refund
- Electronic refund/payment is recommended since it is quick and secure.
- Mail your tax returns by a certified postal carrier. If using USPS, use certified mail with return address card to receive notification of delivery.
- File tax returns even if you do not have any taxable income.
- No tax deducted does not mean you do not owe taxes.
- Keep the taxes you owe to the IRS after withholding to less than $1000 to avoid penalty.
- Write your social security number on all forms and payments.
- Remember to sign all the tax forms before sending them
- Make copies of your tax returns before mailing them
