What should I do once I have installed NetBSD?

• set up X and edit /etc/ttys so that the last line is turned on:

  ttyv6   "/usr/athena/etc/dm /etc/athena/login/config ttyv6" unknown on secure
  

  This will make the X server come up by default every time after you reboot. To change to a tty after that happens, use ctrl-alt-F1 -> ctrl-alt-F6. If you want to return to X, hit ctrl-alt-F7.
• Get a srvtab : You will need to send mail to net-help@mit.edu with the name of your machine (the FULL name), and your username, and explain you want an rcmd srvtab. They will know what to do, and will take a while to get back to you with instructions on how to get it.
• create accounts on your machine:
  • log in as root on the console (in order to su you will need to be in a group called wheel. you will add yourself next).
  • add yourself to group wheel. Using an editor such as emacs or vi, edit the /etc/groups.local file, and put anybody you want to log in as root in group wheel. As an example, here is the first line from my /etc/groups.local:

    wheel:*:0:root,ghudson,jhawk,yoav

    after doing that, install it via:

    cp /etc/group.local /etc/group

  • run /usr/athena/etc/adduser to add Athena users. For example, to add yoav, jhawk, and ghudson to your machine, run:

     /usr/athena/etc/adduser yoav jhawk ghudson

    if you ever want to remove accounts, you can use /usr/athena/etc/remuser .
  • if you want to play around with editing accounts, DO NOT edit /etc/passwd . Instead, you should run a command known as vipw. This will use the EDITOR environment variable to edit a special file very similar to /etc/passwd.
• add yourself to netbsd-announce. This isn't a high-volume list, but will have announcements that will be relevant to you. PLEASE PLEASE add yourself. To do so, log in as yourself, and type:

   blanche netbsd-announce -a
