1st WEST - EAST CAMPUS ROOMING PROCEDURES Except where noted, all class designations refer to the class everyone will be entering the next year. Selections at the rooming meeting will be made in the following order: 1.Squatters 2.Seniors 3.Juniors 4.Sophomores Within each class, preference will be given to those with the most number of terms on 1W. In case of preference ties, a random selection method (i.e. coin toss, dice, etc.) will be used. An upperclassman who has moved onto 1W at anytime during the year will choose with his or her own class at the next scheduled room meeting. Within their class, 1. They will be ranked by straight seniority the year they move on. 2. If they are on the hall for more than 30 days, that shall count as a full term, but only in the years following the year they actually move on. Those doubled for their entire freshman year will have preference over those doubled for only a term of their freshmen year. Singled freshmen will have lowest priority of the three. Upperclassmen who are doubled will have no preference over their class members unless they are forced into the double by the dorm. If upperclassmen are forced into doubles, they will be ranked within their class by the amount of time they were forced to double. If an upperclassman is forced into a double for a full year, he or she will have priority over class members for the following TWO years, i.e., as a junior and as a senior. Any person may squat on a room that he or she presently occupies providing that: 1. He or she has occupied the room since the beginning of the spring term. 2. The room will remain a single if presently a single and a double if presently a double. Roommates may squat on their room provided that it will not be dedoubled. One of two roommates may squat on their room provided that it will not be dedoubled and he or she agrees to accept another roommate. An upperclassman who moves onto the hall at anytime during the school year has NO right to bump a member of a lower class from a room. The upperclassman moving onto the hall must live in the room assigned by the dorm. Room selection and preference will only be honored at the rooming meeting. Room changes that are agreed upon by ALL parties involved will be allowed. This includes anyone who would have rights to a room by lottery order. If a room that has been chosen by a hall member is doubled at some later time, that hall member and all those with lower rooming preference must hold another rooming meeting to chose new rooms. If there is any change during the course of the year, no new random methods of preference shall be used. All random preference results should be recorded at the rooming meeting in case they are needed for later use. If a room becomes available during the year, the new resident of this room will be selected using these preference rules. Squatters remain squatters unless at least two rooms open up, OR it is one month into the first term following the lottery. If these conditions occur, squatters will have last priority within their class. A random drawing shall be used to differentiate between squatters. DECROWDING. Priority for decrowding will go in the following order: 1. Class 2. Anyone who has turned in an official decrowding request. In order for this rule to apply, the request must have been made prior to the person's learning that a room has opened for decrowding. 3. Those in crowded doubles 4. Random draw (but see below). For the purpose of decrowding, roommates will be grouped together, with each groups' priority determined by the higher-ranked person. The priority of the other person in the group will be used to break ties. When two roommates decrowd, there will be a random drawing to determine priority between them. The one with higher priority may choose to move into an open room or stay by himself/herself in the double room. All residents must be present at the rooming meeting. If a resident absolutely cannot be present at a rooming meeting, he or she must notify the hall chair(s) beforehand with a list of top room selections and a name of the person who is to act on his or her behalf in case of a random preference choice. Otherwise, preference is lost and the person will choose from whatever rooms remain after the meeting. No discussion about the rules or why they were approved or disapproved will be allowed at the rooming meeting. Such discussion must be made outside the rooming meeting (at another hall meeting). No changes may be made to these procedures unless the change is proposed at a hall meeting, the proposal then receives a second, and the change is approved by a two-thirds majority of the members present at the meeting. Any such meeting must have a 2/3 quorum of nonseniors. In order to hold a meeting to change these rules, a majority of nonseniors must agree to hold the meeting. Any meeting in any way related to rooming must be announced via the stickmen mailing list at least 3 days in advance.
