FUTURE FIRST WEBMASTERS:

Because of frequent MIT FIRST mentor turnover, this web locker is managed by many different people as time goes on. Please try to keep it in order so that when you move on, the next person can figure out what to do with it. In 2005, I moved everything that was just lying around in the locker to new archive folders called "pre05." Most of the archived team documents and web pages from prior to 2005 should be in those folder. Please try to stick to the following guidelines:

1. Only put current, frequently-updated material in the base folders (.../first and .../first/www). Do not leave old material there; move it to an archive folder clearly labeled with the year. For example, .../first/05archive and .../first/www/05webarchive or something like that. If for some reason the previous webmaster did not do this, feel free to move their stuff into an archive folder when you take over.

2. Use the base folders appropriately: The .../first folder should be used for non-web page material like team handbooks, forms, meeting minutes, design notes, etc. The .../first/www folder should be used for the web site material. All sub-directories for the web site should be .../first/www/subdirname NOT .../first/subdirname. Your index page should be .../first/www/index.html. The .../first/index.html file re-directs to .../first/www/index.html, so do not change it. The URL for the website is http://web.mit.edu/first OR http://web.mit.edu/first/www.

3. Please put all media in a separate folder! This is extremely important for space-saving reasons (see below). For example, if you have media that will go on the website, use a folder like .../first/www/05media. Put any large pictures and video collections in this folder. Smaller images, like web site navigation buttons, can be put anywhere as long as they get archived later.

4. This web locker does not have infinite space. As of 2005, it is limited to 1 GB. If you are approaching the limit and need more space for your site, please delete the oldest stuff first! Pictures and video usually take up the most space, so deleting old media archives can save a lot of room. Make sure you have offline backups of your pictures and video, because they will eventually be taken off the web locker to make space!

5. In oder to keep record of who managed the web locker, please add your name and contact info to the list below:

2005-present: Shane Colton - scolton@mit.edu

THANKS FOR KEEPING THE LOCKER ORGANIZED!
