Statement of Purpose
Why are you, the founders, starting the group?
- Founded in the fall of 2013, moveMENtality was started by friends on campus who wanted to grow in terms of dance ability in a more relaxed and less competitive environment. We wish to continue their legacy and establish moveMENtality as a more permanent dance team on campus as opposed to having it continue as a project.
How is this group unique? Could the ASA find similarities with other groups? If so, why should this group obtain recognition? What are the differences?
- This group of individuals is currently the only all-male dance group based out of MIT’s campus. While we do have members hailing from other MIT dance groups (Ridonkulous, Mocha Moves, Dance Troupe) we also have included dancers from, and who went on to join, Boston based dance teams such as Static Noize, Concept Artists, and Project Nailz. One of our main aspects that sets us apart from these other teams in Boston and at MIT (besides our being all-male) would be that we always try to incorporate humorous elements into our sets either through the choreography, our outfits, or in the music choices. We strive to bring our humor filled dance style to the MIT and Boston communities.
Why does the group need ASA recognition? What resources do you expect to use?
- In order to continue the group’s current goals and pave the way for future moveMEN, we would consider beginning to hold auditions. In order to do this, we would require spaces like T-Club or the MPR in DuPont. We desire ASA recognition so that we may reserve and use these rooms for not only an audition, but also to hold practices and to host dance workshops throughout the semester. Also, if our team were to become more widely known and start being invited to competitions, we would require funding to enter these competitions, to reimburse travel to and from these competitions, and to purchase costumes for our sets.
How do you plan to fund the group?
- We would apply for Finboard funding and possibly apply for grants (either from MIT or otherwise) in order to fund our needs stated above.
What type of events or meetings will the group have? Give specific examples.
- We will definitely continue to have about 2 rehearsals every week. In addition, we will hold team meetings every other week to track set progress, performance opportunities, and general team well being.
Who is the intended audience of the group?
- Our audience is anyone who enjoys watching dance or laughing or doing both simultaneously.
How do you plan to recruit new members?
- Our current new member selection process consists of team discussions about new or developing male talent in the MIT dance community. We usually identify several different candidates and proceed to vote on whether or not each person would be a good fit for our team, both in terms of personality and dance skills, style, and ability. If we decide they would be a good fit for our team, we then personally invite the individuals chosen to join us. If we were to be a recognized student group, we would be able to reserve space for a more formal audition process. We would also apply for booths at Activities Midways to get the word out about moveMENtality.
- Should we keep this? Or be like: “We want to start holding auditions…”
How large do you expect the group to become? Why?
- At our largest, the team has reached a membership count of 10 moveMEN. We expect to stay above 8 members but we will welcome any size of team in the future. We don’t, however, imagine the team reaching numbers over 20 or 25 moveMEN based on the average number of relatively advanced male dancer the MIT dance community has seen over the years.
- Hahah moveMEN
What has already been accomplished?
- moveMENtality has performed in several shows on and off campus in its two years of existence. The members have worked together to create four different dance sets, each made completely with original choreography, with a fifth one currently in the works.
