Walker Memorial Committee

The Walker Memorial Committee is a subcommittee of the Association of Student Activities. It is comprised of student groups with offices in Walker Memorial, and individuals that are concerned about the building. We want to increase the ultilization and improve the atmosphere of M.I.T.'s original student center, and we demand a voice in its future.

There is also a Building Directory. In addition, Senior House, and East Campus are nearby.

Are you concerned about the future of Walker? Are you concerned about Physical Plant, Campus Police, Food Services, and the Dean's Office deciding that future? Are you concerned that the ASA, the UA, and the GSC are out of touch and won't be able to represent your student group's needs? The Walker Memorial Committee is being formed to ensure that the voices of student groups in Walker are heard.

Walker Memorial suffers from neglect; increasing the utilization of Walker is a noble goal. By encouraging and sponsoring events in Walker, we believe that we can force the administration to take notice of the needs of the building. We want to improve the atmosphere of Walker and encourage its use as a student center.

We need a unified, organized voice to lobby the appropriate M.I.T. officers. By holding regular meetings, thus improving the communication between student groups, and expanding the involvement of everyone in Walker's future, we can recreate a sense of community. The committee intends to facilitate events and projects sponsored by multiple groups, and to increase the participation between activities.

We want chairs and sofas in the second floor lounge. We want wheelchair access. We want notice of construction and renovations. We want a student-run 24-hour sandwich shop. We want huge concerts in Morss Hall. We want improved security. We want net drops. We want the halls painted. We want more of the storage rooms and squash courts converted to student offices. We want a student center.

Phil Walsh, director of the Campus Activities Complex, is putting together a "Walker Advisory Board" to serve as a focus group for the future of Walker. The board is going to be comprised of representatives from Physical Plant, Campus Police, Food Services, the Dean's Office, the Undergraduate Association, and the Graduate Student Council. We object to this board, and insist that the student activities in Walker are uniquely qualified to direct its future as an expanded student center.

Join us! This is entirely a student effort, and we need your help. We will be holding Committee Meetings this term to decide our goals and intentions. We have an organizational mailing list; to add yourself, type 'blanche -a yourusername walker'. The mailing list is archived in a discuss group. We also have a Web page that can be accessed from Athena by typing 'add walker; walker'.
