Using the Network

Each apartment in Westgate has a connection to MIT's on-campus network, MITnet. Apartments have a single 10 Mb UTP (10Base-T) connection, and both high-rise and low-rise have 11 Mb wireless (IEEE 802.11b) installed throughout.

Physical connection

Each apartment has one face-plate with two RJ-45 connectors (UTP). The left-hand socket is used for MIT's telephone connection (the RJ-11 phone connector can be plugged into the RJ-45 socket), while the right-hand socket provides connection to MITnet. Most apartments have a second face-place with a single RJ-11 connector (phone), which is unused.

Setting up your computer

The document here provides detailed instructions for setting up your computer to connect to the wired or wireless networks.

Important note

Connection of private hubs, switches or routers to MITnet is prohibited [more...]. This includes the most common wireless access points which are sold as "wireless routers" [more...].
