Using the Westgate Printer

There is a printer in the Westgate lobby which is open for use by all residents. The printer's name is "westgate", and it is an HP LaserJet 8150DN. Paper and toner is supplied by the dorm, so please use an on-campus printer for long print jobs. When the printer runs out of paper, you can get more from the Tang front desk.

Printing from Athena

You can send a PostScript file to the printer from Athena using the command:

lpr -Pwestgate filename.ps

Or for double sided printing:

lpr -Pwestgate2 filename.ps

Printing from Windows 2000/XP

The following steps are necessary to use the printer from your Windows computer:

  1. Download and install the Kerberized LPR printing (KLP) package from the MIT software site
  2. Download extract the latest printer driver from HP [direct link] (you may use the driver included with Windows 2000/XP, but it contains a bug in its support for double-sided printing)
  3. Follow the installation instructions in the IS&T articles for Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The printer's name is "westgate" and the printer type is "HP LaserJet 8150DN"
  4. To set the printer up for duplex printing, after you install the printer, open the printers folder (start/settings/printers), right-click on the printer and select "Properties". Click on the "Device Settings" tab, and change "Duplex Unit" to "Installed". To print duplex by default, click "Apply", then click on the "General" tab, click the "Printing Preferences" button, and change "Print on Both Sides" to "Flip on Long Edge".

You can view the printer queue by opening a Command Prompt window or logging onto Athena and typing:

lpq -Pwestgate

If you see one of your own print jobs, you can delete it by observing the job number and typing:

lprm -Pwestgate XXX

where XXX is the job number. If you print from your own computer, you will probably only be able to delete the job from your own computer (not through Athena).
