sight up so I call up Logrus sight and leave it up.
2) Reminder, what did you want to tell me about my sorcery teacher?
3) Did my leg heal up fully?
4) Did you say it'd take the Jasby trump artist around a day to do a trump
of me with less time for subsequent ones?
5) Care to comment whether Keith's Shadow has matter compilers?
6) How long does it take to pull oneself to a place via Logrus if I already
know where the place is and I've got the Logrus up.
7) How tiring is it to keep the Logrus up for a long time?
8) Can I look for something with the Logrus and have Logrus sight up at the
same time?

1. Okay, starting now? (Where are you?)
2. I'll send you that soon, but I've a bit of a back log still...
3. Your leg seems to be at 90% you think.
4. A good 3 days for a trump, possibly dropping slightly for multiples.
5. Keith shadow: probably no matter compilers, no.
6. If you already know where the place is but don't have a tendril
extended there? The time it takes the tendril to extend there, plus
   a hair.
7. Depending on your end/psy, keeping the Logrus up all the time is a
little like the difference between running (or perhaps just jogging)
   everywhere and walking everywhere.
8. Yes, but it will distract you from both.

Well, wait, does having Logrus sight up make me look distracted? I assume
that I'm not really tired yet but not fully rested either. I'm by the
fountain in the latest (Morley's) Atlantis chatting with the my future
minions. :-)

I made up a chart with my impressions on roughly how I handle the Logrus.
Is this right?

Logrus | Sight | Search = Looks | IS | Time to | Comfortable
Is Up | | = Distracted | Distr. | Exhaustion | Duration
------------------------------------------------------------------------
   1 0 0 = no? no? 3 days 1 day

   1 1 0 = no? no? 2 days 12 hours
   1 1 1 = yes? yes 1 day 6 hours

Oh right, with the remailer crowd. I knew that. ;)

Having Logrus called to mind is slightly distracting, i.e. you can walk
& chat but you might have trouble doing something that's more
complicated (fighting, playing chess, etc.) Searching with the Logrus
is much more distracting, say as distracting as reading a book for a
"normal" speed search. In other words you can pay less attention, but
it will cost you efficiency. Doing both at once will cost you
efficiency, make it hard to keep up even casual conversation (ie
noticeably distracted), and will tire you out faster.

Does that clear things up?

i have no really devious plans for this market/dinner thing and so am
willing to abstract parts of it. i'm mostly just using this as an
opportunity to instill in the minds of impressionable young chaos
lords that shoshana is their leader :-)

here was what i intend to do:
1) acknowledge my mission to get bread
2) set a time for expected rendezvous at the apartment
3) split up and get not only bread but also a cake of some sort
4) try again to get michelina over (after asking morley of course :)
5) talk to galiena about helping to fix tomas
6) hold a mini celebration in tandem w/ dinner for the recent logrus
initiates
7) if i'm lucky, get everyone to help look for a cure for tomas as
their initiation quest to become one of the chessmen.

:-)

how to find michelina:

logrus search for her starting by sawallways. if the tendrils wander around
there and decide she's around there, i'll go in person. (probably not
taking morley, though i'll talk to him first about it.) if not, i'll pull
myself to nearby where she is.

Just checking. I assumed it'd be a good one. It's not obviously poisoned
or anything is it?

It's not obivously poisoned, just looking at it (and it smells like wine).
When you sip it, it tastes quite good.

Does it look like Galiena is trump calling anyone yet? I am planning on
helping out with dinner preps and talking to her privately briefly about
Tomas. If no one else ends up in the kitchen can I send remailer mail to
her alone?

No, she isn't trump calling anyone yet. She appears to be waiting for
some sort of signal that its okay.

Yeah, if the two of you end up in the kitchen together, you can converse
privately.

1) My age. Yeah, I thought I was 23 but I'm not incredibly attached to this
number. I realized that Chaos history sort of sets my age, given that
Morganna and Brand die when I'm 11. Do you want to change my age now?

2) How secret was the id of my father? Did mom say that grandpa knew?

3) I must've met Rohn at least once (when I walked the Logrus.) What was he
like? Can I make it up? I will probably finger him as a contact for the
Chessmen.

Age: 23 is fine. History defines your ages, but not incredibly so,
time flows being as weird as they are in Chaos.

Brand as dad: Mom never said. No one has ever mentioned it to you to
your face, but, well, you can't be sure _no one_ knows.

Rohn: Yeah, you met him when you walked the Logrus, by special
arangement shortly before the previous king was assasinated. He was a
dry and humorless bureaucrat. :)

i was going to make up stuff about morganna. did she ever say anything
about uriel? or the coup, swayvil, sive, etc? i probably asked her in the
way that kids do when they hear stuff about themselves or their family.

was that little thing about the ice dragon ok? even if it wasn't something
morganna would have done, it's a good little tidbit to tell random people
who i want to make feel like they've gotten something.

Your mother didn't discuss politics in any detail with you as a child,
but would answer your questions simply. Swayvil she described as a bad
person, who had hurt her aunt Sive and all of Chaos. Your grandfather
had had to stop him. In retrospect you realise that she was trying to
shield you from the whole conflict.

Nope, don't worry about telling people stuff. Morley wanders off when
he says he does. (Hasn't quite yet.)

I updated my web list of ep's ideas. The order's been rearranged
somewhat and I added some ideas for strengths and weaknesses. Would
you rather see this stuff as a web page or as email? In any case,
the relevant url is.

http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~sunspark/Mer/HydraSekrit/silver.html

I had some questions which for convenience, I'll summarize here.

1) Can I get portions of advanced powers? If so, how much do the
individual pieces of advanced Logrus and Shapeshift cost?

2) Do I think I can work out how to not drop spells racked in the
Logrus if I was touched by Pattern?

3) Also, I bet everyone and their brother has already tried this one,
but can I figure out how to rack spells faster? I'd use a
combination of Logrus and computers, probably something along the
lines of automating the casting process (basically "programming" them
in) but it would still be powered by me. It might even be extra
tiring.

Well, if it were me, I'd be grumpy about this. I thought it was a bit
uncalled for myself, actually. After all, everyone did wait several for
her to say something before they started deciding to have dinner. (And,

You're sorcery teacher was an odd fellow. His name was Yerkes and he
found you when you were thirteen or fourteen. You were exploring one of
the Minobees quieter byways and had gotten lost when he found you and
brought you to his little home. It was perhaps two rooms, and living
room, with two sleeping pallets (He has a servant named Sergei, whom you
never heard speak a word.) a table, and a hearth, and a second room, his
workroom, which you were never allowed into.

He gave you some tea and offered to show you the way home and said you
might come back and see him if you liked, though he asked that you tell
know one you had met him, for he had made powerful enemies and feared
what would happen if they ever found him here. [I'll assume you came
back to visit -- how long did you wait before the first return visit?]

He was always kind, if a litle cryptic, and on the third or fourth
visit, he said you seemed like you might have a talent for sorcery and
would you like to learn? This you should also keep a secret. [Here I
assume you said yes -- did you say so immediately or did you consider it
a while?]

He gave you lesssons regularly, perhaps once or twice a week for many
years. He was very talented at explaining magic too you, and only
rarely had to demonstrate actuall spells for you to figure out how to
perform them yourself. He stressed care and caution, but did not seem
averse to exploring the limits of magic. When you had walked the logrus
and achieved some reasonable competance in it, he explained to you how
to use sorcery to call the logrus to mind and even to incorporate the
Logrus into your spells to make them stronger.

By this time you were getting older and were considering ranging out in
shadow on your own. Shortly after King Staffan was killed, you went to
visit Yerkes, only to find his home burned to the ground and no trace of
either Yerkes or Sergei.

Subject: Hydra: strengths and weaknesses

i had an outstanding meta-question. what do you think of my strengths and
weaknesses ideas? i've cut and pasted them from my web page.

Shapeshift:
Shoshana is stubborn and persistent. I see that she might be better at
holding shapes at the expense of taking more time to learn new ones. An
alternative is that she's quick to change but that her involuntary
shapeshift is too quick too. This seems less like her though.

Warfare:
Strength: A "find weakness" sort of sense to determine pressure points,
the best place to hit, etc. This is a refinement of "Tactical Vision."
Weakness: swords. I had a short childhood story in mind which I never
got around to writing which basically amounted to having gotten badly
wounded in a fencing (insert appropriate blade weapon) class. Perhaps even
by Harold - but he might've been too old to be in my class. There maybe was
some outside rivalry/animosity involved, but it was mainly due to the weapon
being a little too large/heavy and my refusal to admit this or give ground.
Afterwards I refused to make any accusations which led to an uneasy tension
for a while between me and whoever it was.

Logrus:
Strength: Skill with logrus combat and manipulation - fine motor
control. Basically, I'd be able to do with the Logrus what I'd always wanted
to do with swords but tended to fail at, namely hit hard where I could see
it counts. Shaped Logrus charges comes to mind... Another thing I was
interested in was doing tricks like pulling someone's heart out with the
Logrus. Is there such thing as a sharp Logrus tendril? And Logrus sculpture
would fall in this category too :-) These things might start to fall in the
"Advanced Logrus" category.
Weakness: Logrus Defense. I'm not really sure what makes sense for a
weakness here... Maybe I'm bad at breaking down defenses. Another
possibility is tending to be slow at the Logrus search. Though I've used
that a fair bit already, so there might be a precedence for NOT having this
as a weakness.

can i have my wish list have multiple final "eps sponges"?

so, i'd like to say, "put remaining points into warfare" to get the highest
rank that allows, then for instance "put anything left over from *that* into
status".

which brings me to my other question. could i buy a little more status?
like to be the jasby heir? not that i'm sure i want that, but i'm
considering it.

No, I really want to limit that to one "sponge." I'm trying to keep
this from being a complicated mathematical formula.

You can buy more status, but keep it to 3 or at most 4 points. (Though,
really, 4 is head of house....)

with the logrus, can i find a piece of paper, like the one that i've
got (with the same handwriting, in the same ink), that says "chessmen"
quickly? if so, can i put it in my pocket without being obvious? if
necessary, i could use the logrus to put it somewhere else not
immediately visible, maybe on the way to the dining room, and pick it
up as i go seat myself.

alternatively, could i get my own slip of paper and forge his
handwriting?

also, how do i go about talking to morley privately? do i do as he
did, ie announce that i'm going to have a private word with him, then
just send remailer mail to him?

re: can't bring logrus sight up
oh, i guess i dropped the logrus sight then. i had lost track.

i say goodbye to michelina, return to albatross.

metagaming since i know the player's gone: can i say goodbye to morley and
arrange to meet again?

then i go to the room there that i'd picked.

through all this i think i've still got the logrus up. so am i _really_
tired now? if so, i go somewhere to rest before starting new things.

Subject: Hydra - after the Atlantis nonsense

XSTo:... oops :)

Okay, here's more of the old mail:

"Since you don't have that much specific information about Jasra, and
you want to be able to do this sureptitiously, you decied that your
best bet is to start discreetly poking about in Chaos. You head to
the Ways of Minobee first. The Duke is in residence, as are Storm,
his wife Morgan and his son, Harold. Sidana is not currently making
one of her in frequent appearances, which comes as no surprise.
Morgan seems as though something is irritating her. Minobee seems
_not_ to be the place to look just now -- there's an air of tension,
that seems to indicate that something significant is in the works.

You actually find some of the information you want in Jasby: there are
still people around in Jasby who had at least moderate amounts of
power in your grandfather's court. It turns out that Jasra is not
only part demon, but also a very minor member of House Soward (one of
the smaller houses, an Earldom). They can suggest some places in the
Black Zone which Soward frequents and perhaps give you some
information about what kind of demon stock she's descended from... It
maight take a little digging"

I rest off in a quiet shadow, then quietly follow up on my previous
investigation. I'll let you re-interpret what that means. Either
returning to Jasby and getting the names of Black Zone places, or
digging more to get information on Jasra's demon stock.

In Jasby, I use my human form.

Afterwards, I work on a new form to use when traipsing about the Black
Zone. A less striking variant on the Mikele form, shorter, wider,
darker, regular black eyes.

Okay, it's pretty clear that you did, in fact, get names of places in
the Black Zone associated with Soward. Jasby doesn't really have any
more information on Jasra than you've gotten. (At least, that anyone is
admitting to you.)

What do you want to do in the Black Zone?

I'll walk around for a bit trying to look innocuous and blend in. I want to
see if I've got a decent form that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

If I'm ok there, I look for a little background info like: names of
important places, cities, etc. A newspaper or library would be great. A
talkative bartender would do too. (Abstracts of this would be fine, I just
don't want to start poking more and find any nasty surprises.)

After acquiring background, I casually ask around for gossip about Soward
and/or his relatives, hopefully leading to talk of Jasra or her mother's kind.

If it proves difficult to get a lead, I've got some ideas on how to go about
this more specifically.

Soward is a family name, not a person, in case you weren't clear.

Let's back up a bit: you got the names of three shadows from Jasby:
Igrosse, Sondak, and Negishi as places frequented by, or perhaps more
accurately, affiliated with House Soward. The on one of the wilder
edges of the Black Zone. You want to get there how? (And am I

Okay, thanks. Though at some point I thought a house name could also stand
for the head of the house. For instance, "Sawall" would mean Merlin. Is
that still the case?

>on one of the wilder edges of the Black Zone.
Cool! :-)

>You want to get there how?
What's typical for how people get about the Black Zone shadows? I thought I
saw mention of paths, which would imply that the average merchant just
followed those. If that's an option, I do that. Otherwise, I Logrus in,
trying for somewhere (and some time) less public than the town square
fountain at noon.

The name of a house could refer to the head of the house, at least in
certain contexts, but not really in general use.

> how people get around

There are some shadow paths, though if a shadow is strongly associated
with a particular house, said paths may pass through controlled lands.
If it helps, think of houses a little like countries and associated
shadows as territories. The catch is, shadow denizens don't travel from
shadow to shadow as lightly as Americans travel about the country, and
the "average merchant" might not exist in all places, or at a minimum,
might not look very humanoid.

Which of the three shadows do you head to, btw? (of Igrosse, Sondak,
and Negishi)

Well, you can certainly Logrus your way in. (The Logrus, by the way,

You arrive in Negishi to find yourself on a rocky precipice overlooking
a smelly plain of hot springs and geysers. In the distnace you can see,
from left to right, some low mountains, what might be some sort of
fortified city, and what might be something like the sea. Behind you is
a very large mountain. You're standing on what might be a path of some sort.

You take a little time and use the Logrus to summon a pack with
provisions.

How are you setting out for the city? You're currently on a ledge and
could go along the path, such as it is, either up to the right or down
to the left. The city is way off in the distance ahead of you and
beyond the plain of hot springs and geysers. You don't see a way to

You flip the coin and it comes up heads, so you start following the path

I take defensive measures (duck, or whatever seems appropriate) then take a
look at the arrow.

Either someone wanted to hit me and is a bad shot, or wanted to warn me and
is a good shot.

I'd like to discern between these two. I'll try some kind of ruse, maybe
sneaking back and up to get a look, or poking some article of clothing up to
see if another arrow comes.

Defensive measures are really pretty moot, as the arrow is already stuck
in the ground at your feet. You look at the arrow stem. It appears to
be some sort of dark wood with a dark colored featherlike tail. Pulling
the arrow out of the ground reveals a very sharp metal tip. There's a
quick warning from your danger sense as a second arrow catches the edge
of your boot.

Sure, you can do that, at least in theory. If you've grabbed someone
with the Logrus, that's probably sufficient to target a spell.

You call up the Logrus and start extending a tendril in what you think
is the approrpriate direction and the barrage of arrows increases. Any
change in plans?

it's my turn now, right? well here's a whole string of things i try to do
next (unless one fails.)

i'll ask if the lady who inquired after me gave her name, and if not, what
did she look like?

then i'll leave quietly and re-rack my teleport spell in my killing grounds
shadow - the one where i played with spells.

then i'll drop off my trump at the albatross safe, with instructions that
it's for morely.

then i'll shapeshift to that form that i was using when i was experimenting
on the nature of fizzled spells. it was sort of mousy brown and non-descript.

then i'll go back to neigishi and turn the *other* way :-)

You think you're in the Negishi, but you don't seem to be in quite the
same place. It's very hot, wet, and smells stringly of sulfur -- you're
in the field of hot springs and geysers now.

Well, the Logrus is always a little on the random side, so it's not
bizarre that it didn't return you to exactly the same spot. You're not
sure if you were imagining it, but it almost seemed like it was a little
bit more erratic than usual today.

Yup you can shapeshift enough so that it's not actively harmful, just
annoying. You're in a form that's partway to a demonform.

If you're willing to stop travelling towards the city, you can search out
with the logrus for a pair of binoculars. You have no idea how long it
will take. Do you want to do that?

if i can set a limit such as "i'll stop and look for binoculars but
only for 10 minutes or so" then i do that. but since i don't want to
get sidetracked again, if i can't, i just push onward. if i have any
applicable warfare skills towards being cautious, i'll employ them :-)

away", and the like.)

In ten minutes, you turn up no binoculars here. You push on towards the
city. The topology of the land is a little odd, such that it goes out
of easy view as you start to get really close. You head over the last
hill, and you're close enough to see the city edges. It's mostly stone,
and a little dusty, and pretty empty looking from here.

I'd like to send/receive Remailer mail at this address and from mer@mit.edu
as well.

I don't think the mer@mit.edu is going away since it's sipb sponsored.

I really did want to play Hydra real bad a few months ago. Then things
seemed to peeter (sp?) out and I actually lost interest. Then work got even
busier. I do still want to have a go at it though, especially with the
possibility of newer leaner rev. :-) Is this Hydra 2.0? ;-)

Oh, speaking of change, if it's appropriate, I'd be willing to have a
"radiation accident" of some sort to cause a personality shift to that
Shoshana's not so methodical (read "slow" ;-) I forget if I mentioned that
before.

Hihi

You hadn't actually mentioned that before, but I can see hgow that
hinders you.

I'd prefer to see her personality evolve as a result of in game
occurances, but if you want me to start burning her for taking to long,
you have enough bad stuff that I should have no trouble obliging. ;)

Me too... Well, I started again, so assuming I never trump or talk to PC's

things! :-)

(I realize that the recent lapse was my fault, next time I'll try to
