MIT Amnesty
International Constitution
Article I.
Purpose
Section 1.01
The purpose of MIT Amnesty International
is to provide students and interested persons the opportunity to express their
concerns for human rights and international justice, and to actually partake in
activities that can address the issues they are concerned about.
Article II.
Membership
Section 2.01
Any member of the MIT community is
eligible to become a member of MIT Amnesty International. One is considered a
member of MIT Amnesty International in any given academic term if she has
attended at least one club activity and one meeting in the preceding or current
term. Non-MIT persons are eligible to become members of MIT Amnesty
International.
Section 2.02
The organization’s membership will at all
times consist of at least 5 MIT students and be more than half MIT students.
Section 2.03
This organization will not discriminate
based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement.
Article III.
Officers
Section 3.01
This organization will have six officer
positions:
Section 3.02
President or Co-Presidents
(a)
The president(s) shall be the official representative(s) of
the group to any other organization, to MIT, and to any outside body.
(b)
The president(s) will preside over all meetings.
(c)
The president(s) is(are) responsible for determining when
meetings are and publicizing this to the group.
(d)
The president(s) shall be the coordinator of all officers,
and shall assist all officers when they need it.
(e)
The president(s) must be distinct current MIT students.
Section 3.03
Treasurer
(a)
The treasurer shall be responsible for the finances of the
group.
(b)
The treasurer is required to sign all checks/vouchers of
the group.
(c)
The treasurer shall be responsible for keeping a budget for
the group, including for each event, and applying to the appropriate funding
bodies (both within and without MIT) to secure requisite funding for each
event, and working with event coordinators in budgeting for events.
(d)
The treasurer shall be responsible for assisting members in
receiving reimbursements when necessary.
(e)
The treasurer must be distinct current MIT student.
Section 3.04
Elections
(a)
Elections of officers shall occur at the beginning of the fall
semester.
(b)
Any member and MIT student of this organization is eligible
to run for office.
(c)
Quorum for elections is two-thirds of the group.
(d)
Any member is elected if he or she wins a majority of the
voting members.
(e)
If more than two people are running and no one wins a
majority, then the person with the fewest votes is dropped from the ballot and
votes are recast.
(f)
The term of office runs from the day of election until the
day of the next election.
Section 3.05
Removal
(a)
Officers may be removed by a two-thirds vote of the
members.
Article IV.
Meetings
Section 4.01
Meetings shall be held at least every two
weeks during term.
Section 4.02
Meetings shall be presided over by the
president(s), unless he and/or she (they) is (are) absent, and in that case the
treasurer shall preside.
Section 4.03
All decisions shall be made by a majority
vote of all members present.
Section 4.04
Quorum for a meeting shall be one-fourth
of the members of the organization.
Article V.
Amendments
Section 5.01
Amendments to this Constitution for MIT
Amnesty International shall be presented by any member of the organization.
Section 5.02
Amendments shall be passed by a two-thirds
vote of the members present.
Section 5.03
Quorum for amending this constitution
shall be one-fourth of all members of the organization.
Article VI.
ASA Governance Clause
Section 6.01
MIT Amnesty International agrees to abide
by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities, and its
executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the by-laws of this
organization shall be subject to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure
that they are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.
