MIT Women's Soccer off to 2-0 Start
The MIT's Women's Soccer Team (2-0-0) started off the 2006 season with a bang and let fans, family, friends and opposing team's know that something is brewing out of Cambridge this year with a 2-1 overtime victory over traditionally strong Brandeis University (0-1-0) last Saturday and a solid 4-0 victory over Simmons College (1-2-0).
Against Simmons College on Wednesday, MIT's women's soccer team came out strong once again with another excellent showing at Steinbrenner Stadium. Last year's scoring leader junior forward Amy Ludlum opened up her 2006 account with two goals against Simmons slotting one pass from freshman forward Liz Theurer into the back of the net and ripping another left-footed shot into the top of the net from just inside the 18-yard box. Theurer built on her impressive rookie debut against Brandeis with two more goals.
The central midfield partnership of freshman Katie Pesce and senior Ashleigh Leonard was once again formidable, dominating play on the ground and in the air and controlling possession, which allowed MIT to move the ball around easily and effectively.
Senior Andrea "Dre" Staid and sophomore Andrea "Jersey" Bradshaw paced the outside of the midfield and served many dangerous crosses into the box. Dre was particularly dangerous on corner kicks serving up several good scoring chances. Midfield subs junior Janine Hopmans and sophomore Kat Routhier came on to play well and contribute solid minutes.
The backline of senior captain Mary Harding, senior Chi-Fong Wang, junior Karen Davie and sophomore Jody Wu was once again very strong and had little trouble limiting Simmons to ineffective shots from distance.
Freshman midfielder Julia Roberts continued to be the ultimate stopgap for the team's goalkeeper injury problems, collecting her second win in as many starts in net and recording her first career shutout, turning aside seven shots in the process.
***Player of the Match***
For the second time in as many games the player of the match goes to a freshman, this time to striker Liz. With two goals and an assist, she paced MIT's attack and helped the team avenge last year's loss to Simmons. Liz was a constant threat all game with her hustle and determination to get on the end of lose
balls and find the back of the net. Her speed and talent has already had a big impact on the team both in finding the back of the net and in creating a dynamic double threat up top with Amy.
The team's next game is Saturday, September 9th at Worcester State. Kickoff is at 11:00 am.
