MIT Women's Soccer suffers 1-0 setback to Salem State College
The MIT Women's Soccer Team (3-2) dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Salem State College on Saturday in Salem, Mass.
The afternoon match was a frustrating contest, featuring numerous MIT chances on net. The team was held scoreless for the second time this year. Despite very physical play from Salem State and a few questionable calls from the officials, the team battled right till the end of the game, but was unable to find the back
of the net.
Junior striker Amy Ludlum had the best chances all day and caused problems for Salem State's back line with her speed. Amy had a shot hit off the crossbar and also a chipped ball just wide of an open net. Freshman forward Liz Theurer had several close encounters with the Salem State goalie, and though she left
the game early in the second half after suffering a hit to the head, she was able to return and help the team's cause in the last quarter of an hour of the match. Freshman Julia Roberts came off the bench to help up the team's cause up top and played some good balls to her teammates.
Junior Janine Hopmans made her first start of the year, playing on the outside of the midfield and made some good runs and several excellent crosses. Senior Andrea Staid was Janine's counterpart on the other side of the midfield and had a battle all day dealing with one of Salem State's better attacking players on the flank.
Senior Ashleigh Leonard and freshman Katie Pesce also fought hard in the center of the midfield. Both Katie and Ash had good scoring chances on corner kicks, but headed the ball wide. Sophomores Andrea Bradshaw and Kat Routhier came off the bench to contribute quality minutes in the midfield.
The backline of senior captain Mary Harding, senior Chi-Fong Wang, junior Karen Davie and sophomore Jodie Wu played a solid game once again and battled hard against some tough Salem State players. The lone Salem State goal was suffered late in the game and came as a result of a great individual effort from a Salem State player.
At Salem State's home turf, the game also had an emotional undertone as it was dedicated to Carrie Holmstrom, a 17-year-old junior high school goalie from Dartmouth High School in Massachusetts, who suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns on 70 percent of her body when she was involved in a serious auto accident last April. Carrie, who is currently rehabbing at Shriner's Hospital, was in attendance. Proceeds from ticket sales went to a fund for Carrie.

In her third game as starter after returning from an injury, senior captain Kat Vater was excellent against Salem State making several tremendous saves that kept the team in the game, including deflecting a shot from point blank range off the cross bar in the first half and coming out to save a shot from a Salem State player who broke through the defense and only had Kat to beat to the back of the net. Kat continues to lead the team with her vocal presence on the field.
