MIT Women's Soccer Team outscores Emerson College 6-1
On Wednesday, one game after tying the MIT record for points in a game with eight against Mount Holyoke College, junior forward Amy Ludlum broke the Institute record with nine points against Emerson College in a 6-1 victory.
Amy recorded four goals and one assist in the home game at Steinbrenner Stadium, helping push MIT's record to 6-3 on the year. Amy had her second consecutive hat trick in a run that has seen her score an unbelievable 17 points in two games. Amy now tops all scorers in the NEWMAC with nine goals and four assists for 22 points.
Freshman striker Liz Theurer continued her consistent goal scoring with her sixth goal of the year. The goal proved to be the game winner, Liz's fifth of the season. She also added two assists.
Senior captain Mary Harding also contributed significantly to the scoring. Late in the first half, she pushed forward from her center back position to knock home a great feed from Liz in the box. As the game came to the end, she also made a tremendous run forward with the ball and slotted a pass across to Amy
who knocked it home for the finishing touch on the day. Mary now has two goals and two assists on the year for six points -- pretty solid offensive contribution from the team's defensive leader.
Senior Ashleigh Leonard recorded her third assist of the season when she played a perfectly weighted through ball to Amy who cut behind Emerson's defense and knocked it home for the first goal of the game. In an offensive-minded effort, Ash was able to get forward and make great runs all day. Center midfield
partner freshman Katie Pesce continued her hard nose play anchoring the midfield defense and starting the attack from the team's middle and defending third. Sophomore Kat Routhier came of the bench in the first half and started the second half in the center of the midfield, defending hard and helping control possession with some good distribution.
J, Dre and Jersey (junior Janine Hopmans, senior Andrea Staid and sophomore Andrea Bradshaw) controlled the outside of the midfield with their pace and hard defending. Both J and Dre were able to take the ball wide on the flanks and serve up some dangerous crosses. Jersey made some great runs coming off the bench. Dre was excellent once again with her corner kicks, always driving in dangerous balls that the team was able to get a head on.
The offensive push of MIT made for a day with many long balls knocked forward from Emerson and the defensive backline of Mary, senior Chi-Fong Wang, junior Karen Davie, sophomore Jodie Wu and freshman Erika Granger had a lot of bouncing balls to deal with and several numbers-up counters from the opposition. Despite, giving up an early goal -- the first time a team has scored against MIT in the first half this year -- the defense held tough and kept Emerson off the board for the remainder of the game.
Senior captain Kat Vater made eight saves in route to her fourth win of the season.
***Player of the Match***
Freshman Julia Roberts came off the bench to start the second half up top and so impressed the team with her hustle, patience on the ball, distribution and confidence that the team tabbed her player of the match. Julia also record her first point of the season -- and the first points from the bench -- when she assisted on Amy's third goal. The play was pure hustle in which Julia fought off a sprawling Emerson goalkeeper for the ball, turned and knocked a pass to a slashing Amy who redirected the ball into an open net. Julia is the first player to repeat as Player of the Match this year. She earned the distinction in the season opening victory against Brandeis University, when she filled in as goalkeeper due to injuries. It is probably safe to say Julia will be one of the few players to ever be named Player of the Match in the same season as a goalkeeper and as a field player.
Next up, MIT puts its undefeated home record on the line against nationally ranked, conference foe Wheaton College (9-1). The game will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 30.
