A fixed layout may not be as wickedly cool as tailorable one,however, it has a lot of advantages. It will be easier to use, it will be faster to use and most importantly, it assures that no part of the mail message will be hidden by overlapping windows. A tiled windowing environment would solve obscured message component problem, but Im not at all sure how intuitive it would be to use. The content of the message, or at least a cue to the all the content should be appearant at first glance. Overlapping windows within the message format is going to lead to more pain than gain.
