This Thursday, Nov. 10, Phil will be demonstrating xtoxim and xim between 11:00 and 12 noon for a few of us here at the Computer Resource Lab (in the media room, 9-520). Date: Mon, 07 Nov 88 16:29:03 EST Joe, Our inability to grab, store and print from our video camera, disc, MIT cable, and tape sources has been a serious limitation to the functionality our video resources and video itself. After not getting far with Athena concerning such video capture tools and capabilities, I decided to find out and do something myself. In this light of this, I now present "xtoxim". It can now convert output from "xwd" into the more useful "xim" format used here. This includes video. Once the images are in this format it is possible to view them on any type of monitor using "xim" or do some futher processing using the Utah Raster Toolkit. The toolkit can further convert color images to postcript, for good quality printing. So it is now possible to grab, process, send and print color X and video windows. However, much of this image processing requires quite a bit of memory. The current 4 megs our video workstation is not enough. The raster toolkit and the color 24 to 8 bit quantization programs do not have enough core space to work. It is also not possible to display more than one image at once. I do not whether you can get additional memory, but adding it to the video workstation would certainly be necessary if we are to scan,cut/paste and generally process images with our video facilities in the future. I also made modifications to a video widget to allow the dithering to be turned of in still mode. This is necessary to get the best resolution when making the above screen dumps. I'll send this extension to the video-hackers and hopefully they will accept this as a permanent feature. I've talked to a few of them and they seem interested. I'll put the video 'xtoxim' translator, modified 'xvideo' and any other future related programs under /site/mit/public/vaxbin on the video Vaxstation (m9-520-1).
