Subject: The outcome

Just so you know - the committee has NOT awarded
me the doctorate.  They found a great many problems
with the written thesis (though not with the work
or the talk) and have insisted on a thorough
re-write.  So --- save those bottles of champagne
etc.  Thanks to you all for coming, and I shall
go back to my desk to write.  I may yet become
a doctor of philosophy.  

My special thanks to those who atteneded my
practise talks and to Greg G. for setting it all
up this afternoon.
