Instead, I'll address the xfd problem. 

What you really want to do is use xfd -fn and then the font name.

For instance

xfd -fn -\*-helvetica-\*

The \ before the * are to ensure you don't get shell completion.
(Obviously the above is a bad example as I actually underspecified the
font name)
