Portability was a concern in the design of this; ie. your program could have 'hard-coded' fonts which specified only the font attributes you were looking for, and the X server would come up with some appropriate font, provided one existed. But that font could be different across different X servers. Well, I guess a 5 minute start-up time is annoying enough to resort to full fontnames. JIM
