@chapter[Hardware]

Your VAXstation II is capable of processing one million instructions
per second.
It has two Mbytes of memory,
a thirtyone Mbyte hard disk,
and a dual diskette drive.
It comes with a nineteen inch monochrome display,
a detachable keyboard, and a three-button mouse.

@section[The MicroVAX II CPU . . .]

is housed in the KA630-AA component,
together with one Mbyte local memory,
a boot/diagnostic ROM,
a floating point processor,
a console serial line unit,
an interval timer,
and a Q22-bus map.

The system's other Mbyte of memory is housed in
the MS630-AA memory expansion module.

@section[The Bitmap Video Controller . . .]

is housed in the VCB01-KP component.
It interfaces with the LK201 Keyboard,
and the VS10X-EA Mouse.

The RQDX2 Disk Controller uses the Mass Storage Control Protocol
to control the RD52 31 Mbyte hard disk unit,
and the RX50 818 kbyte dual diskette drive.

@section[The RX50 818 Kbyte Dual Diskette Drive . . .]

can hold two 5.25-inch RX50K DEC diskettes.
Each diskette can hold up to 400 kilobytes of information.
You can use diskettes to backup files,
and you can create Unix file systems on them if you are feeling
adventurous.
If you want to copy files onto diskette,
see the Man page for the @i[tar] utility.
If your VSII stands upright,
/dev/ra1a is the left drive and /dev/ra2a is the right drive.

@section[The DEQNA Ethernet Interface . . .]

is a Q22-bus compatible communications module attatched to
an ethernet transceiver cable.
It is what makes your workstation part of the local network.

@section[The Back Switches]

Your Workstation has three switches on the back of main unit,
two of which are important: the HALT ENABLE Switch and the
POWER-UP MODE Switch.
When Athena installs your machine,
the switches should be set as indicated in the diagrams below.
The HALT ENABLE Switch should be set to HALT DISABLE,
the POWER-UP MODE Switch should be set to NORMAL OPERATION.
If they aren't set properly, reset them.
For more information about these switches,
and about the hardware in general,
see the DEC @i[VAXstation II Hardware Information] Manual.
