ATHLETIC CARD REMINDER! All students, faculty, staff, employees, and alumni who use athletic facilities for Physical Education, Intramurals, Intercollegiate Sports, Club Programs, or any form of general recreation are required to purchase the M.I.T. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Note: This is a comprehensive list of activities offered by the Physical Education Program. Many classes are seasonal or are not not offered every quarter. Aerobics Non-students must pay a $10 fee each quarter for all aerobics classes. Please pay by mail with check payable to MITAA. Send to the Physical Education Office, W32-125, via intercampus mail prior to the first class meeting. Aerobics-Body Sculpting This challenging class is a new addition to the program. Designed specifically to complement an aerobic workout, it focuses on muscle strengthening through the use of dumbbells, body bars, tubes, and other equipment. The workout is done to music and is adaptable to all fitness levels. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Aerobics-Conditioning This conditioning program with music enhances your flexibility, strength and cardiovascular endurance through calisthenics and jogging exercises. Please wear appropriate footwear for running. Bldg W32 Wrestling Room Aerobics-Early Bird A cardiovascular conditioning class that uses a balanced mix of high and low impact movements for approximately 30 minutes followed by a muscle conditioning section. Primary muscle groups of the upper and/or lower body, including abdominals, will be worked. Hand held weights or rubber bands may be used. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Aerobics-Exercise Fitness An aerobic class of lower impact where at least one foot remains on the matted surface at all times. This class is designed to reduce stress on the bone and joints and is an alternative to high impact or combo classes. Stretching and toning exercises, as well as abdominal strengthening work, are incorporated into the last 15-20 minutes. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Aerobics-Dance An aerobic dance class where both feet may be off the ground at the same time, and impact on the body may be similar to jogging or skipping type movements. Appropriate for the individual who seeks a fast-paced, super intense cardiovascular challenge and who requires no specific exercise modifications. 10-15 minutes of muscle conditioning and a relaxing stretch segment round out the total workout. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Teaching Aerobics Would you like to supplement your "pocket money?" Learn to teach aeroibics and not only get into great shape, but learn how to others to do the same! This class is taught by Bally's coordinator of aerobics teachers. Fee TBA. W32 T-Club Lounge Aikido This class is recommended for those who desire a good aerobic workout while working on the concepts involved in dealing with conflict without aggression. The work-outs have been described as "moving Yoga." Bldg W32 Wrestling Room Aikido - Kokokai Similar to regular Aikido, this class will teach you to "roll with the flow," improve your flexibility with stretching exercises and basically know how to handle your body in a relaxed but ready state. Bldg W32 Wrestling Room Aquatics-Beginner Swimming Class is for those who are at ease in shallow water but are not safe in deep water. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Beginner Swimming "for the petrified" This beginner class is specifically geared for those who are not at ease in shallow water and may actually fear the idea of swimming. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Advanced Beginner Swimming Class is for those who have some swimming ability but cannot pass the swim test. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Intermediate Swimming Conducted in the deep pool for those who wish to gain proficiency in the various strokes. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Advanced Techniques For students who wish to learn the competitive strokes or improve their technique. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Diving A basic course for those with limited experience, but the desire to learn the fundamentals of springboard diving. Dives that are taught include forward, backward, half twist, forward and backward somersaults in the various diving positions (layout, pike, tuck). Dives with more difficulty may be taught dependent upon the skill level of the class. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Scuba Diving Special instruction encompassing a full semester of lecture, pool work, and 5 ocean dives leads to internationally recognized NAUI Scuba Diver Certification. Fee of $290 covers instruction, text, rentals, log book, dive tables, and use of all necessary equipment. Pre-registration begins approximately 30 days before the first scuba class meeting and entails: (1) Scuba swim test (2) Enrollment/health form (3) Deposit of $145. No previous experience necessary, but you must be comfortable in the water and have adequate swimming ability. Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Aquatics-Advanced Water Polo People who sign up for this class should already be familiar with the basics of water polo and be in good physical condition. The class will focus on strategy, drills, and playing the exciting game of water polo! Bldg 57 Alumni Pool Archery A basic course in fundamentals of target shooting. Class will be conducted outdoors or indoors dependent upon weather conditions. Baseball Field or Bldg W33 Rockwell Cage Badminton A basic course for beginners covering the fundamentals of this fast moving indoor game. All necessary equipment is provided. Bldg W33 Rockwell Cage Baseball: How to Hit Learn the fundamentals of how to hit a baseball which is considered to be one of the most difficult hand-eye coordination skills. Bldg W33 Rockwell Cage Basketball This is an instructional course covering the basic fundamentals of basketball for those with little or no previous experience. Various drills will be utilized leading up to game scrimmaging. duPont Gymnasium Boxing Course covers the basic skills of offense and defense. Sparring with proper headgear included during final sessions. Be prepared for a lot of physical conditioning. Bldg W32 Exercise Room Dance-Ballet I/Modern Introduction to the basic techniques of ballet to give the student an awareness of body placement and carriage in developing movement coordination. No previous experience necessary. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Dance-Ballet II More complicated barre and floor combinations for students who have already acquired a basic vocabulary and can execute correct fundamental body positions. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Dance-Folk Learn international dances from around the world. No experience and no partner necessary. Please bring sneakers or non-marking shoes that can be wiped clean. W32 T-Club Lounge Dance-Jazz A highly stylized dance form originally born from African and folk dance rhythms. Contemporary dance rhythms, including blues, rock, and disco, will be used in combination set to popular music. W32 T-Club Lounge Dance-Middle Eastern This tradition is vivacious, supple, graceful, and sublime. Classes consist of warm-ups, exercises focusing on isolation and coordina- tion, followed by dance combinations. All WOMEN regardless of age and figure are welcome. Wear leotard, tights, or loose-fitting clothes to class. W32 T-Club Lounge Dance-Modern An intermediate class for students with two to three years of previous dance training. The class content is drawn from traditional and experimental styles, including exploration of early, contemporary, and modern dance approaches. The class begins with a conventional dance warm-up focusing on improving balance, strength, coordination, and flexibility. The latter part of the class is devoted to slow, fast, and jumped combinations across the floor, with some work on rhythmic training and improvisation. Dance-Partner The Waltz, Fox-trot, Tango, Cha-cha and Jitterbug are among the dances to be taught with attention to style and technique. No previous formal training necessary. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Dance-Troupe This class will be a smorgasboard, offering basic introduction to jazz, tap, modern, and funk dance styles. It will be enthusias- tically taught by members of MIT's Dance Troupe. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Fencing Instruction in the basic fundamentals includes footwork, attacks and parries. After learning the rules, including scoring, students will participate in competitive bouts. Bldg W32 Fencing Room Fencing-Intermediate For those with previous fencing experience, including participation in the beginning fencing course. W32 Fencing Room Field Hockey-Indoor This is a coed class for players of all skill levels. Individual techniques covered will include stickhandling, passing, shooting, tackling, offensive and defensive tactics and the testing of game strategies through scrimmage situations. Figure Skating This class builds on the skills taught in the general skating class. It is assumed that you will already know how to skate backwards and forwards. This class will improve your style of skating, and you will learn a variety of figure skating moves, including forward and backward edges, mohawk and three turns, spirals, lunges, spins, and a variety of jumps (bunny hops, waltz jumps, toe-loops, mazurkas, salchows, etc.). You must have figure skates. (Hockey skates are unsuitable for this class.) Rentals are available at the rink. Fitness thru Rowing This fitness class utilizes exercise equipment specific to the sport of rowing, as well as conventional equipment. Pierce Boathouse Frisbee The course consists of instruction in the basic techniques of Frisbee, as used in the competitive game of ultimate Frisbee. Artificial Turf Field Golf This is a basic course which includes the fundamentals of grip, stance, and swing. The short, middle, long irons are practiced plus specialized skills of pitching, chipping, putting as well as a basic understanding of rules and scoring. Classes take place outdoors on the west end of the athletic fields. Briggs Field Gymnastics (Men) Instruction covering the basic fundamentals involved in the competitive sport of men's gymnastics. There is an emphasis on tumbling and parallel bar skills with some work on the side horse, horizontal bars, and vaulting. No previous experience necessary. duPont Gymnasium Gymnastics (Women) Instruction covering the basic fundamentals of floor exercise and apparatus involved in the competitive sport of women's gymnastics. No previous experience necessary. duPont Gymnasium Inline Skating A class for the beginning or advanced beginning skater that has equipment but needs instruction in the basic fundamentals which will enhance enjoyment and personal safety. Instruction will cover forward and backward skating, turning, stopping, and cross-overs. Full body padding is required including helmet, wristguards, knee and elbow pads. Hockey This course is designed for the beginning hockey player. The fundamentals of passing, shooting, stick-handling, as well as positional play, are taught. As the course progresses, students are given the opportunity to experience game-like situations through drills and scrimmages. Johnson Rink Jiu-Jitsu This course introduces you to the Jiu-Jitsu art of self-defense, descendant of Japanese Samarai. Learn to defend yourself in any situation. Jiu-Jitsu: where size and strength are irrelevent. duPont Wrestling Room Jogging The class focuses on learning how to jog utilizing prescription heart rate and conversation pace. In addition there is film analysis, learning how to set up and do interval workouts, fartlek workouts, and race. Stretching and drills emphasizing proper technique are also included. Judo This is a basic course for those with no previous experience in a sport that has its origin in ancient Japanese fighting techniques. Students are taught how to protect themselves with proper falling techniques and learn approximately six basic throws. The class culminates with a tournament where students gain an understanding of the competitive sport. duPont Wrestling Room Karate This is an introductory course in one of the oldest of Japanese martial arts. The program includes the teaching of basic defense and attack techniques, as well as an appreciation of martial arts. The techniques of Karate-Do are applicable to self defense. No previous martial arts experience necessary. T-Club Lounge Lacrosse A basic course covering the skills of passing, catching, cradling as used in this game of native American origin. Offensive and defensive drills will lead up to competitive scrimmaging toward the end of the course. Artificial Turf Field Physical Fitness The objective of this vigorous class is to improve upper body strength, flexibility, and cardio-vascular endurance. Students should come prepared to do calisthenics-type exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups, as well as a running workout. Students will be tested for improvement at the beginning and end of the course. Johnson Indoor Track Pistol Shooting instruction in the indoor range using 22 caliber pistols with an emphasis on firearm safety. A ten dollar range fee is payable at the first class (check payable to MITAA). Bldg W32 Pistol Range Ropes Adventure Ropes is an experiential leadership, confidence and team building program which includes group games, trust activities, problem-solving initiatives, and concludes with participation on the indoor high ropes course. duPont Gymnastics Area Rugby Introduction to the sport of rugby covering basic fundamentals, rules, and team play. Scrimmaging will be non-contact. Rugby Field Sailing Introduction to the basic fundamentals of sailing with theory and practice. Take advantage of MIT's fine sailing facility on the Charles River. Students must present a boating swim test certificate at the first class. Sailing Pavilion Sailing - Advanced / Intro to Sailboat Racing Learn to skipper and crew a variety of boats fast upwind and downwind. Other topics covered are: starting, tactics, strategy, right of way rules. Participants must be proficient sailors and have completed the basic sailing course or its equivalent. Sailing Pavilion Sculling Learn the proper techniques involved in rowing a one-person shell. Take advantage of the fine rowing facilities on the Charles River. Students must present a boating swim test certificate at the first class. Pierce Boathouse Sculling - Intermediate Class emphasizes further development of rowing techniques enabling the students to do on-the-water training. Also, there will be instruction on developing conditioning programs. Pierce Boathouse Self Defense RAD - Rape Aggression Defense for women teaches practical defense techniques, as well as providing basic information on personal safety, awareness, risk reduction and avoidance. Specially trained officers of the MIT Campus Police will instruct the class. W31-117 Skating The basic fundamentals are taught which include forward and backward skating and stopping, skating in circles both forward and backward. Students are generally divided according to ability utilizing multiple instructors. Students can rent skates for this class at the rink. Johnson Rink Skiing-Cross Country Basic cross country touring and skating will be covered in this course which takes place in beautiful Woodstock, Vermont. The class will include instruction, a ski tour, and some basic orienteering instruction. (4 pts credit) Skiing-Downhill All levels are accommodated in this course, which is offered only during IAP. The course consists of six meetings, leaving MIT at 5:30pm and returning at approximately 11:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Package includes transportation, lesson, and lift ticket. Nashoba Valley Ski Area Soccer-Indoor This course will introduce you to the basic and intermediate skills of soccer, including passing, dribbling, feinting, shooting, juggling, collecting, and positional play. Small-sided games will be practiced to incorporate these skills to lead up to an 11-sided indoor game. Johnson Center Squash Introduction of the basic skills for beginners who wish to learn this fast moving indoor racquet sport. All necessary equipment is provided. Bldg W32 duPont Courts Squash-Intermediate For those with previous playing experience including participation in the beginning squash course. Bldg W32 duPont Courts Table Tennis Instruction of the basic fundamentals will get the beginner into the game and those with "Ping-Pong" experience to the next level. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge Tae Kwon Do Introduction in one of the oldest martial arts and newest Olympic sports. Be prepared for a lot of physical conditioning during this course. Bldg W32 T-Club Lounge T'ai Chi A classical system still practiced in China. T'ai Chi is an exercise used to maintain body flexibility, develop body consciousness, and promote good body movement through body awareness. It is theory and practice for ultimate fitness. Bldg. W32 T-Club Lounge Tennis An introductory course for those with limited or no playing experience. Instruction will include the basic strokes, serve, volley, rules and scoring. Students must bring their own racquets. Outdoor Courts (or Johnson Indoor Courts for inclement weather) Tennis - Intermediate This course is for students that have had previous playing experience. The main pre-requisites are the ability to serve and sustain a rally. Outdoor Courts (or Johnson Indoor Courts for inclement weather) Tennis - Advanced For those with above average or high intermediate skills derived from several years of play. You must be competitive with other intermediate players. Having taken beginner class does not necessarily qualify you for this class. Carr Tennis Bubble Unihoc A fast moving, hockey-type game of Swedish origin played in a gymnasium. Individual skills and team play will be covered during the course. duPont Gym Volleyball An introductory course for those with limited or no playing experience. Instruction will include techniques for serving, passing, setting, spiking. There will be team play during the second half of the course. Bldg W33 Rockwell Cage Intermediate Volleyball This course is for students that have had previous playing experience. Basic fundamentals will be reviewed prior to the introduction of basic offensive and defensive strategies. Bldg W33 Rockwell Cage Walking This class is intended for people who are interested in walking as a means of maintaining or improving fitness. The class will be stuctured to accommodate all levels of walkers. Even if you have NEVER exercised before, you should feel welcome to join the class. Calculation of target heart rates, proper footwear, and basic principles of exercising for lifetime fitness will be featured. Weight Training Teaches students proper techniques of lifting and spotting. Provides information for putting together individual workout programs. Course is taught as a lifetime activity as an integral part of overall fitness. Proper gym etiquette is taught and expected. duPont Weight Room Wellness The Wellness course informs students about their options for making healthy choices in their lives. Topics covered include physical exercise, nutrition, stress management, lifetime fitness, thinking well, and substance abuse. This is an overview course which includes lectures and labs. duPont Conference Room Yoga Energy, peak performance, and relaxation provide a practical toolbox of techniques and experiences. It is designed to empower you to concentrate, remember, generate energy, and sleep well. The meditations give you perspective and help balance the competing demands of a fast-paced life.
