How to configure X under NetBSD Unlike Linux, NetBSD does not attempt to configure X during the installation. Instead, after you have installed NetBSD, log in as root, and type the command XF86Setup at the prompt. This will start a program that will ask you questions about your monitor, mouse, and graphics card. Answer all of the questions, and when XF86Setup is done, it will generate a configuration file named XF86Config for you. After you have done this, you will need to do the following things. First, you must create a link between the correct X server for your computer and the the /etc directory. The command line to do this is: ln -s /usr/X11/bin/XF86_servername /etc/X the correct X server to use is based on the kind of video card you have. It was chosen for you when you selected the type of video card you had under XF86Setup, and will be listed in /etc/XF86Config. The XF86_SVGA server tends to be the correct cohice for most newer video cards, including new Diamond and Matrox models. After you have made the correct symlink, type startx at the prompt to test if X works. If it is correctly configured, a grey screen (like the default Athena background) and a mouse pointer will appear on the screen. If this is the case, then you may either run a program named "xvidtune" to optimize your settings, or you may accept what you have and exit. After you have done this , you must enable the machine to start X by default when you boot the machine. To do this, edit the file /etc/ttys and change the line: ttyv6 "/etc/athena/dm /etc/athena/login/config ttyv6" unknown off secure to read this: ttyv6 "/etc/athena/dm /etc/athena/login/config ttyv6" unknown on secure At this point, you can reboot the computer, or execute the command: kill -HUP 1 as root, and if you have done everything correctly, Xlogin should start and you will be presented with the "Welcome to Athena" screen.
