How to INSTALL Linux Athena I/S now supports Athena on Intel x86 based Linux workstations. The only supported installer is the I/S Linux-Athena installer. This installer has changed recently, and now supports features such as custom partitioning schemes, more hardware support, and a customized installation. I/S Linux-Athena will currently install Athena 9.2, which is based on RedHat Linux 9.0. Therefore, any hardware supported under RedHat Linux 9.0 should work with an I/S Linux-Athena machine. It is important to note, however, the the floppy-based installer does NOT support the full complement of hardware that RedHat 9.0 supports. The installer supports most common network cards and SCSI cards, however you may encounter a situation in which a piece of hardware supported by RedHat 9.0 is not supported by the installer. The CD-based installer, however, does support all hardware supported by Redhat 9.0. The installation requires an active network connection for the installation. The installer will work with either DHCP or a static IP address, though a static IP address is probably the best choice for installation. For up to date information and installation instructions, go to http://web.mit.edu/als/www N.B. The SIPB Installer is deprecated and should not be used. Only current versions of Linux-Athena are supported by OLC. We do not support the old SIPB Redhat-Athena versions, nor should you be running these versions, as they are old, and unmaintained, leaving you vulnerable to attackers. Last Updated: 24 October 2002
