The command to change the format of a counter is the @Modify(). The syntax of the command is: @Modify(Counter-name, attribute value) Counter-name is just the counter you want to change - e.g., Page or FootnoteCounter. Here are some examples: 1. Changing equations to be numbered within section instead of within chapters: @Modify(EquationCounter,Within Section, Numbered <(@#@:.@1)>, Referenced <@#@:.@1>) It will produce the output: 1 + 2 = 3 (1.1.1) And when it is referenced using the @ref() command the parenthesis will not be included. The @ref() would become 1.1.1 in this case. 2. Changing Chapters to be named by the word One, Two, etc. @Modify(Chapter, Numbered <@O>, Referenced <@1>) The output would look like: Chapter One The Title of the Chapter 3. Changing Footnotes to be numbered by "*"'s @modify(FootnoteCounter, Numbered <@@+[@*]>, Referenced <@@+[@*]>) 4. Changing page numbering. Page numbering is special because it is directly built into Scribe. The page numbering can be altered either with the @Modify() or @Style() commands because of this. The following are equivalent and will change the page numbering to the form "i,ii,..": @Modify(Page, Numbered <@i>, Reference <@i>) @Style(PageNumber <@i>) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Counters that are available normally in any document type are: Page Numbers the pages FootnoteCounter Numbers footnotes Enumerate Numbers items in the enumerate environment Itemize "Numbers" items in the itemize environment (Normally just a bullet) These additional ones are available in the report, article, and MITthesis document types: Appendix Numbers Appendix created with @Appendix() Chapter Numbers Chapters created with @Chapter() EquationCounter Numbers Equations generated by @equation() which include @tag() command FigureCounter Numbers Figures created with @Figure() or @FullPageFigure() Paragraph Numbers paragraphs Section Numbers sections created with @section() SubSection Numbers subsections created with @subsection() TableCounter Numbers Tables created with @Table() TheoremCounter Numbers Theorems created with @Theorem() This one is available only in report and MITthesis: MajorPart Number MajorParts created by @MajorPart() Attributes that can be used are: Init Specifies the starting value for the counter. Normally the acceptable values are integers. Numbered Specifies what the numbering should look like - e.g., 1,2.. or A,B,C. Acceptable values are templates, listed below, enclosed in brackets. Referenced Specifies how the reference should look when executing @ref(). Acceptable values are the same as Numbered. Within Specifies a parent counter. When the parent counter is incremented the counter is reset to the Init value. Acceptable values are any valid counter name Here is the list of counter codes that you can use: @1 Arabic cardinal numbers (1, 2, ...) @2 through @9 Arabic cardinal numbers with leading zeros (001 ...) @' Abbreviated ordinals (1st, 2nd ...) @A Uppercase alphabetics (A, B, C) @a Lowercase alphabetics (a, b, c ...) @F Capitalized ordinals (First, Second ...) @f Lowercase ordinals (first, second ...) @I Uppercase Roman numerals (I, II, ...) @i Lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, ...) @O Capitalized cardinals (One, Two, ...) @o Lowercase cardinals (one, two, ...) @* Asterisks, up to 12 in a row (*, **, ... ************) @# Value of the parent counter defined by Within @:character If a parent counter exists, prints the character specified @;character When no parent counter exists, prints the character specified @$ When followed by a list of literals (each separated by $'s), uses that list for the counter. @, Separates templates in a list character Prints the specified character @@ Executes the scribe command that follows. @@@@ An at-sign Further information on counters can be found in the Scribe User Manual, sections 15.7 and 15.8, and the Scribe Database Administrators' Guide, Section 2.
