Scribe can generate files for various devices. Below are two common devices used with scribe. To specify a device use: @device(DEVICE) where DEVICE is a device named below. The default device is PostScript. When a file is scribed, it generates a file which if formatted and can be printed or viewed on screen. These files have a different suffix. That is: scribe file.mss -----------> file.device device file suffix description --------------------------------------------------------------------------- file .doc generates plain text output (no choice of fonts) without page breaks. Can view the scribed file with 'more file.doc'. lptln .lpt generates plain text output (no choice of fonts) with page breaks for simple line printers. PostScript .PS generates postscript output which can only be printed on PostScript (ln03R) printers. With PostScript you can use various fonts and sizes and even include graphics into your document. These files are viewable on screen by '/mit/athenadoc/viewdoc file.PS' (first attach athenadoc).
