The Athena dialup servers (the name dates from the time when they were accessible via modem) provide remote access to Athena for users who do have access to an Athena workstation. Users can access the dialups via SSH, and can use X11 forwarding to run X-Windows applications if they desire. The dialups are a shared resource and there are often many users on a single dialup machine. While there is no prohibition against running computationally intensive software on the dialups, users working with MATLAB and similar software will get much better performance using a regular Athena workstation instead. All the dialups are Sun machines running Solaris - there are no IS&T maintained Linux dialups. Users interested in a Linux dialup should see the "Is there a Linux dialup" stock answer in this category. $Date$
