The Athena dialup machines are shared by many people at a time.  They are
not intended for extended or computationally intensive use.  X and X
applications are VERY computationally intensive, given the nature and size
of X in general.  

Some programs, such as Matlab or Maple, are also very computationally
intensive.  While there is no prohibition against running them on the
dialups, please note that they will run much faster on an Athena
workstation.

Please refrain from running graphical web browsers or e-mail clients
on the dialup servers.  They place unnecessary load on the servers,
and you should be able to run them locally on whatever machine you are
connecting from.
