STATISTICS Packages 

Both Xess and MATLAB have statistics capabilities.  MATLAB is designed
primarily for scientific and engineering computation, while XESS is a
spreadsheet with statistic and graphing tools.  The Numerical Recipes
library is also installed on Athena.  You may wish to include their
statistical routines if you are writing your own programs.


  matlab, in the matlab locker.   
    This is a supported package, focused primarily on scientific and
    engineering computation.  MATLAB may satisfy your needs if your
    statistics problems are simple and straightforward.  For example,
    MATLAB handles standard deviation, error bars and covariance
    matrices.
  
  xess, in the xess locker.  
    Xess is now a supported package.  Xess is an easy to learn and use
    spreadsheet designed specifically for science and engineering
    computing.  It provides a full range of mathematical, statistical,
    matrix and string functions while handling complex calculations with
    the ease of a familiar spreadsheet format.  Because it is an X
    Windows application, Xess can communicate with other X programs,
    sending and receiving data from other applications, and
    automatically recalculating all changed values in a spreadsheet as
    the data changes.
  
  Numerical recipies, in the recipes locker.
    The recipes are a collection in C, ANSI C and FORTRAN of numerical
    computational routines. You can use the sources or compiled libraries 
    for most platforms.
