In addition to web browsers, other web-related software is available
on Athena. Such software includes HTML editors, Web helper applications,
and java-related applications.

1. HTML Editors:

You do not need a dedicated HTML editor to create a web page; all you
need is a text editor (like emacs) and a knowledge of html programming.
However, an HTML editor can make the process easier.

The editor HoTMetaL Pro is available on Suns and SGIs. Simply type:

   add hotmetal
   hmpro -v 2.0 &

Mapedit makes the creation of imagemaps easier by allowing you to
define regions of a picture directly on the picture itself.
Mapedit is available in the cwis locker; type:

    add cwis
    mapedit &

2. Helper Applications:

These applications allow you to play audio or video files over the web,
or to view downloaded files. The application you need is determined
by the file being downloaded. The page from which you are downloading
should inform you what software is necessary.


The Real Audio player is currently available for Linux, Suns
and SGIs.  Type:

    add infoagents
    realplay &

Adobe Acroread is available on Suns and SGIs to read files created
in Adobe pdf format (files ending with the extension ".pdf").
To use it, type:

    add acro
    acroread filename.pdf &

3. Java

A java compiler is available by typing:

   add java
   javac filename.java
