I think Basil Davidson's Africa series esp. parts 3 (Caravans
of Gold) and 4 (Kings and cities) while not dealing specifically
with the subject of Islam provide information about Islam in
West Africa in a historical context.

Wasn't there a film entitled "Ceddo" (sp.?). I saw this long ago, but
remember west African Muslims were protagonists and the time frame was
1600's-1700s.

In response to Misty Bastian's query on depiction of
Islam outside the Middle East, I can recommend the film
"Ceddo" by Sembene Ousmane (Senegalese dir.) which
represents a criticism of Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa, and
the Algerian film "Bab-el-Oued City" by Merzak Allouache.

Misty
Ousmane Sembene's _Ceddo_ and _Guelwaar_ both came to mind
quite readily. I hope that helps a little.
