Biography

Arno Rafael Minkkinen is a Finnish American photographer whose nude self-portraits in the landscape have passed the thirty-five year mark. “A wizardry that defies categorization,” is how Grace Glueck of the New York Times described his unmanipulated self-portrait works. Last fall the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts presented SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen—Photographs from 1970—2005, a museum-wide retrospective and with catalog essays by novelist Alan Lightman, and critics Arthur C. Danto and A.D. Coleman. “Environmental art meets performance art,” wrote The Boston Globe, “...in his sleek abstracting of the human form, Minkkinen can seem like a photographic Brancusi.” Studying with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind at Rhode Island School of Design, Arno continues to this day making new works. From time to time he has made self-portraits with his wife and with close friends. In 1979, he began a life-long series of self-portraits with his son. Five monographs have been published to date: Frostbite (Morgan & Morgan, 1978); Waterline (Marval/Aperture, 1994, and winner of the 25th Rencontres d'Arles' Prix du Livre); Body Land (Motta, 1997); Ten Minutes Past Midnight (Musta Taide, 1999); and SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen—Thirty- Five Years of Photographs (Chronicle Books, 2005). His work is in major national and international collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the High Museum, the Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. He is represented by Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York, Barry Friedman Ltd. in New York, and Robert Klein Gallery in Boston. Currently Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Arno is also docent and guest professor at the University of Art & Design Helsinki.
