The second annual athena cluster upgrade is once again underway after the halt in progress during September.  The equipment ordered then, and then cancelled, will be re-ordered in the begining of June.  For typical delivery times, the equipment can be expected in the region of July 1st to July 15th.

Until then, an interim upgrade has been arranged.  This interim upgrade consists of an increase in the total number of terminals (from 7 to 11) although the capabilities of the terminals will be the same.  In July those terminals will be replaced by the new equipment, and one additional terminal will be added.  The most critical shortcoming of the OE cluster (lack of terminals) will thereby be allieviated in the short term, although the enhanced capabilities will not appear until the summer.

The furnishings in the cluster are now at the level to adequately support 11 terminals.  A new workstation desk will be ordered to allow the use of a 12th terminal.  

Plans are now underway to provide the Computational Hydrodynamics Facility with up to 3 DECstation 3100's.  This will relieve the anticipated demand for these workstations when they are in full use next fall.  Similar plans are being considered for the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory (Water Tunnel).

Communications Links are being arranged to allow for better communication between the OE Athena and the Naval Ship Design computer facility.  These links will consist of hardwired cabling from the cluster (Terminal m7-321-1) to room 5-308.
