Progress is continuing on the 2@+(nd) Annual Athena Cluster Hardware Upgrade.  The interim equipment is installed and functioning, bringing the cluster up to a total of 11 usable terminals.  Some teething troubles were discovered with each of the interim terminals during early April, but they are all operational now.  The new workstation table has been received, and the communication link to the Naval Ship Design computer facility has been installed.

The new equipment is confirmed as ready to order on June first, and will be some of the last "free" equipment ordered by Athena (they are now out of grant money).  Later acquisitions will require departmental support.  The new athena equipment should provide adequate workstations for the next few years (probably until 1993).

Plans are now underway to provide the Computational Hydrodynamics Facility with up to 3 DECstation 3100's.  This will relieve the anticipated demand for these workstations when they are in full use next fall.  Similar plans are being considered for the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory (Water Tunnel).  These plans may not be fulfilled in entirety due to the lack of funding at Athena.  The current plan is to provide a total of 5 Dec 3100's to various offices.  Fortunately, a fair number of Dec 3100's are available, and few other departments are aware of the fact.  Hopefully, by acting quickly, we will be able to obtain several of these while they are still free.
